According to recent reports, Apple may release its first foldable MacBook, the MacBook Fold, with a screen diagonal of 20.3 inches, expected to enter mass production in 2027. This information comes from renowned tech industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who shared his thoughts on Twitter.
Apple's new device is likely to feature the largest screen among the company's laptops. To make it portable, the screen will fold in the middle, rather than between the screen and keyboard as seen in existing MacBook models. The physical keyboard will be absent, replaced by a software keyboard on the touchscreen, potentially with haptic feedback to enhance typing accuracy.
When the keyboard is not needed, the lower part of the screen can be used as part of the interface or fully extended for watching movies or used as a keyboard in desktop mode. This could signal the emergence of a touch-focused version of macOS, marking a significant breakthrough.
Despite the excitement around the idea, it's important to remain skeptical as foldable devices often encounter issues related to durability, screen quality, hinge wear, and other challenges. Apple will undoubtedly want to address these issues before releasing the product, and the company still has time until 2027 to abandon the project if it doesn't meet their standards.
Nonetheless, if Apple manages to bring the MacBook Fold project to fruition, it could become a truly exciting innovation in the tech world.
