A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless rotary hammer.
This section covers 18–20 V and 36–40 V class cordless rotary hammers with SDS Plus holders for drilling holes in concrete, brick and stone, and in chiselling mode for removing tile and plaster. They are handy for electrical and plumbing work, installing anchors and suspended structures and renovation. Having no cable is especially useful in new buildings without power yet and when working at height.
Three-mode models drill, hammer-drill and chisel, while two-mode models have no chiselling mode. If you plan to remove tile or plaster, choose a model with chiselling and a suitable chisel. Read how to choose a rotary hammer chisel.
Impact energy of 18–20 V cordless rotary hammers is usually 1.2–3 J, enough for 6–20 mm holes, while 36–40 V models deliver 3–5 J or more. See what is impact energy (J).
Most cordless rotary hammers have an SDS Plus chuck with a maximum diameter in concrete of up to 20–28 mm. Some models come with an interchangeable keyless chuck for drilling metal and wood. Read differences between SDS plus, SDS max, and HEX systems.
A rotary hammer is one of the most power-hungry cordless tools, so 4–5 Ah batteries are recommended for 18–20 V models, and a 36–40 V platform for intensive work. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).
A brushless motor in rotary hammers improves impact consistency, the number of holes per charge and tool life. Read brushed and brushless motor.
A weight of 2–4 kg with battery, an anti-vibration system, an auxiliary handle and a safety clutch reduce fatigue during long work on ceilings and walls. See what is vibration level.
Before drilling, check the wall for cables and pipes, hold the tool with both hands, wear glasses and ear protection, and remove the battery before changing the bit. Read how to use a rotary hammer safely and how to use cordless tools safely.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless rotary hammers by impact energy, voltage, battery capacity, modes and weight and choose the right model for your jobs.
