Cordless Screwdrivers: 3.6–20 V Drill-Drivers, Hammer Drill-Drivers and Impact Drivers

Cordless Screwdrivers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless screwdriver.

This section covers 3.6–20 V cordless drivers — from cordless screwdrivers to drill-drivers, hammer drill-drivers and 1/4" hex impact drivers — for driving screws and drilling wood, metal and plastic, and in hammer mode for holes in brick and blocks. They are used for furniture assembly, drywall installation, fitting shelves and brackets and general renovation. Having no cable is especially convenient when working at height or far from a socket. The category is intended for home use as well as for workshops and job sites.

What to consider when choosing a cordless drill-driver

Type and purpose

A standard drill-driver suits screws and drilling wood and metal, a hammer drill-driver also drills brick and blocks, and an impact driver with a hex chuck quickly drives long fasteners. For the differences, read how to choose a cordless impact driver.

Torque and clutch

For home tasks 25–45 N·m is enough, all-round 18–20 V models deliver 50–80 N·m, and professional hammer models 100–140 N·m. A 15–25 position clutch prevents damage to the screw head and material. See torque (N·m).

Chuck and speed

Drill-drivers usually have a 10 or 13 mm keyless chuck, while impact drivers use a 1/4" hex holder. Two-speed models offer a low speed for driving and up to 1500–2000 RPM for drilling. Read types of chucks and their applications.

Voltage and battery capacity

3.6–7.2 V screwdrivers suit small assembly jobs, 12 V models are light and compact for furniture and small jobs, while 18–20 V is more powerful and versatile. 1.5–2 Ah batteries reduce weight, and 4–5 Ah packs suit long drilling sessions. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Brushless motor

Brushless drill-drivers are more compact, run longer per charge and hold torque better under load. For occasional home use, a brushed model is also sufficient. Read brushed and brushless motor.

Platform and kit contents

A drill-driver is often the first cordless tool, so choose a platform that also offers the other tools you need. A kit with two batteries lets you work without breaks, while a body-only version pays off if you already own batteries. See what is a unified battery platform.

Ergonomics and weight

A weight of 1–1.8 kg with battery, a rubberised grip, LED light and a short head reduce fatigue when working overhead and in tight spaces. Read tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Safe operation

Before drilling, check the wall for cables, clamp the workpiece and remove the battery when changing accessories. Charge batteries only with a compatible charger. See how to use cordless tools safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless drill-drivers by torque, voltage, battery capacity, chuck, motor and kit contents and choose the right model for your jobs.
