Cordless Chainsaws: 10–16 Inch Bars and Mini Pruning Models

Cordless Chainsaws: 10–16 Inch Bars and Mini Pruning Models

Cordless Chainsaws

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless chainsaw.

This section covers cordless chainsaws from the 18–20 V to the 80–82 V class with 10–18 inch bars, one-hand mini chainsaws for pruning branches and pole saws. They are used for pruning trees in the garden, cutting firewood, clearing fallen trees and cutting beams and timber on site. A cordless chainsaw needs no cable or fuel, runs quieter and suits both home gardens and professional use. For a comparison with corded models, see how to choose an electric chainsaw.

What to consider when choosing a cordless chainsaw

Type and purpose

Mini chainsaws (4–8 inch) are light and handy for pruning branches and small garden jobs, while 10–16 inch bar saws cut logs and firewood. The choice depends on the timber diameter and how often you work. See how to choose a cordless tool.

Bar and chain

Bar length sets the maximum cutting diameter: 10–12 inches is enough for pruning and thin logs, 14–16 inches for firewood and thick branches. Cordless chainsaws often use a 3/8" low-profile chain with a 1.1–1.3 mm gauge. Read how to choose a chainsaw bar and chain: length, pitch and gauge.

Voltage and battery capacity

20 V (18 V) saws suit pruning and home jobs, 36–40 V models handle thick timber and longer work, and 48, 54–60 and 80–82 V saws come close to petrol models. A saw with a 4–5 Ah battery or twin batteries makes noticeably more cuts per charge. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Motor and chain speed

A brushless motor delivers higher chain speed (about 10–20 m/s), longer runtime per charge and less wear. Brushed models are cheaper and adequate for occasional use. See brushed and brushless motor.

Chain oiling and tension

An automatic oiling system and a see-through oil tank protect the bar and chain from overheating. Tool-free tensioning lets you adjust the chain quickly right on the job.

Battery platform

If you already own TOTAL, DYLLU, EMTOP, Makita or DeWalt platform batteries, you can choose the saw without a battery and charger. Some 36 V models run on two 18 V batteries at once. Read what is a unified battery platform.

Weight and ergonomics

Mini chainsaws weigh about 1–2 kg with the battery, while 14–16 inch models weigh 4–6 kg. Good balance and rubberised handles reduce hand fatigue during long work. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Chain brake and safety

Check for a chain brake, protection against accidental start-up and a hand guard, and on mini saws a chain guard. Wear goggles, gloves and protective clothing and beware of kickback. Read how to use a chainsaw safely and how to use cordless tools safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless chainsaws by bar length, voltage, battery capacity, motor type and weight and choose the right model for your garden or job.
