Pneumatic Spray Guns: HVLP and LVLP Guns for Cars, Furniture and Metal

Pneumatic Spray Guns: HVLP and LVLP Guns for Cars, Furniture and Metal

Pneumatic Spray Guns

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pneumatic paint sprayer.

This section covers pneumatic spray guns with gravity-feed and suction-feed cups and HVLP, LVLP and conventional high-pressure systems for painting and varnishing cars, steel structures, furniture, doors and walls. They are used in car paint shops, furniture production, construction and home renovation. An air spray gun gives an even, fine finish and has no electrical parts, which suits environments with paint vapour, but it needs an electric or petrol compressor with sufficient output. For more on air tools, read what pneumatic tools are and how they work.

What to consider when choosing a pneumatic spray gun

System: HVLP, LVLP or high pressure

HVLP guns use a high volume of air at low pressure, so paint loss is low, LVLP needs less air and suits small compressors, and high-pressure models are fast but create more overspray. For large areas there is also airless technology. See how to choose an airless paint sprayer.

Nozzle size and cup

A 1.3–1.4 mm nozzle suits base coat and clear coat, 1.7–1.8 mm suits primer and 2.0–2.5 mm suits thick materials. A gravity cup (0.5–0.6 l) saves paint, while a suction cup (1 l) is convenient for large areas. Read electric paint sprayer delivery rate, nozzles, and paint viscosity.

Air consumption and compressor

HVLP guns consume about 200–400 l/min and LVLP guns 100–200 l/min, and air must be supplied continuously and steadily while painting. The real compressor delivery should exceed consumption by about 30–50 %. See how to choose an air compressor and how to calculate compressor air delivery.

Working pressure and adjustments

Spray guns usually need an inlet pressure of 2–4 bar, so a precise regulator with a gauge is required. Adjusters let you set air flow, material flow and fan width. Read how to choose compressor working pressure.

Air preparation

Air for painting must be dry and oil-free, otherwise craters and runs will appear in the finish. Use a filter-water separator, plus a fine filter for quality work, and never connect a spray gun to a line with a lubricator. See how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.

Inlet, coupler and hose

Spray guns have a 1/4" inlet for a EURO, ORION or RAPID coupler. Choose a flexible, paint-resistant hose with an 8–10 mm inner diameter so pressure does not drop at the gun. Read how to choose an air hose and connectors.

Personal protection

Paint and solvent vapours are harmful, so work in a well-ventilated area wearing a respirator with paint filters and safety glasses. See how to choose a respirator and how to choose safety glasses.

Cleaning and spare parts

Right after work, clean the cup, nozzle and needle with a suitable solvent before the paint dries, and disconnect the air before disassembly. Nozzle sets, needles and seals can be replaced with spare parts. Read how to use pneumatic tools safely and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare pneumatic spray guns by system, nozzle size, cup type and capacity, air consumption and working pressure and choose a model that suits your jobs and compressor.
