A detailed buying guide: how to choose engine-powered concrete equipment: mixer, vibrator, screed and power trowel.
This section covers petrol power trowels — machines with rotating blades that level and densify the surface of fresh concrete floors. They are used when building floors in warehouses, workshops, garages, car parks and residential buildings, and for creating a hardened top layer with dry-shake hardeners. The internal-combustion engine provides autonomous work on sites without a cable. The category is intended for construction crews and flooring contractors.
Walk-behind single-rotor machines suit small and medium areas, while small-diameter models are for working along walls and in corners. For large areas, choose a model with a large rotor and a powerful engine. See what motor tools and engine-powered equipment are and how to choose them.
Power trowels use a four-stroke engine rated at 5.5–9 hp (4–6.5 kW). Power should match the rotor diameter so that the machine keeps its speed on stiff concrete. Read differences between two-stroke, four-stroke and diesel engines and engine displacement, power, torque and RPM: how to compare engine-powered equipment.
Rotor diameter is usually 600–1000 mm: 600–800 mm models suit rooms and edges, 900–1000 mm models large floors. A larger diameter works faster but is heavier and needs a powerful engine.
Machines usually have 4 blades, and a float pan is used for the initial floating pass. Check the blade pitch adjustment and whether a float pan is included.
Rotor speed is usually 70–150 rpm: low speed is used for floating, high speed for final burnishing. For a good result, start when the concrete supports a person's weight and footprints are no deeper than 2–3 mm.
A four-stroke engine runs on straight petrol, while the crankcase and gearbox oil must be checked regularly. Engines with an oil-level sensor are protected against low oil. Read fuel, engine oil and two-stroke mix: how to choose and use them correctly.
Machines weigh 60–100 kg: a height-adjustable handle and an automatic cut-off that stops the rotor when you release the handle improve safety. See how to choose work gloves.
Engine noise reaches 95–100 dB, and work is done on wet concrete. Wear ear protection and waterproof safety footwear. Read how to choose hearing protection and how to choose safety footwear and protective rubber boots.
Do not work indoors without ventilation, and clean concrete off the blades right after work. Check that blades, spark plugs, filters and gearbox parts are available. See how to safely use internal-combustion-engine tools and equipment, how to maintain and store motor tools and engine-powered equipment and how to choose spare parts for gasoline and diesel engines.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare petrol power trowels by rotor diameter, engine power, rotor speed and weight and choose the right model for your floors.
