Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tools: 12–20 V Tools for Cutting and Sanding

Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tools: 12–20 V Tools for Cutting and Sanding

Cordless Oscillating Multi-Tools

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless oscillating multi-tool.

This section covers 12, 18 and 20 V class cordless oscillating multi-tools for precise cutting of wood, drywall, plastic and thin metal, plunge cuts, sanding and scraping off old adhesive, sealant and tile grout. They are indispensable in renovation, furniture assembly, door and flooring installation and plumbing work, where other saws simply do not fit. With no cable, you can work overhead, inside cabinets and far from a socket — in the workshop or at home. For the general principles, read how to choose a cordless tool.

What to consider when choosing a cordless oscillating multi-tool

Type and purpose

Compact 12 V class multi-tools suit small household jobs and tight spaces, while 18–20 V models handle everyday renovation and longer cutting. Household and professional models differ in housing strength, accessory change system and vibration damping.

Oscillation rate and angle

Oscillation rate is usually 5,000–20,000 OPM and the oscillation angle 1.4°–3.6°: a larger angle cuts and clears debris faster, a smaller one improves precision. Speed control lets you use low rates for plastic and sealant and high rates for wood and metal. See how to choose an oscillating multi-tool: OPM, oscillation angle, and accessory compatibility.

Accessory mount and accessories

A tool-free quick-change mount (for example Starlock or a universal OIS system) lets you swap a blade in seconds. Make sure the mount is compatible with readily available accessories: wood and metal plunge blades, segment saw blades, a triangular sanding pad, scrapers and carbide grout blades.

Battery voltage and capacity

The 12 V and 18–20 V classes are common for multi-tools, and a 2.0–4.0 Ah battery usually gives 20–40 minutes of active cutting. A lighter battery reduces arm fatigue when working overhead. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Platform and kit contents

If you already own batteries from the same maker, you can choose a body-only version; for a first purchase, a kit with battery, charger and accessory set is more practical. Batteries of the TOTAL, EMTOP, DYLLU, Makita and DeWalt platforms are not interchangeable. Read what is a unified battery platform and how to choose a battery and charger.

Motor

A brushless motor gives 20–30 % more runtime on the same battery, runs cooler and holds its oscillation rate under load. Brushed models are more affordable and suit occasional home use. See brushed and brushless motor.

Vibration, weight and ergonomics

A multi-tool runs at a high frequency, so a vibration-damped housing, slim grip and a weight of 1.2–2.0 kg with battery matter. LED lighting helps you see the cut line in dark corners. See what is vibration level and tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Safe operation

Remove the battery before changing accessories, wear safety glasses and gloves, and check walls for cables and pipes before cutting. A worn blade heats up and vibrates more, so replace it in time. Read how to use cordless tools safely and tool safety systems and their purpose.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless oscillating multi-tools by voltage, oscillation rate and angle, accessory mount, motor type and kit contents and choose the right model for your jobs.
