Drill Presses: Benchtop and Floor-Standing, 220/380 V

Drill Presses: Benchtop and Floor-Standing, 220/380 V

Drill presses

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a drill press.

This section covers mains-powered benchtop and floor-standing drill presses for precise drilling in metal, wood and plastic in workshops, garages and small production, including models with stepped or variable speed control. For an overview, read what electrical equipment is and how it is classified.

What to consider when choosing a drill press

Chuck and drilling capacity

Check the maximum chuck capacity (for example 13 or 16 mm) and the maximum drilling diameter in steel, and for large holes whether the spindle has a Morse taper. Read types of chucks and their applications and how to choose a metal drill bit.

Quill travel, throat and height

Quill travel sets the drilling depth in one pass, the column-to-spindle distance sets the maximum workpiece width, and the column height sets the workpiece height. On drill diameter and length: how to choose drill-bit diameter and length.

Speeds and speed control

Different materials and bits need different speeds: belt-driven machines have several steps, while variable speed control allows quick changes. See what is rotational speed (RPM).

Power and supply

Household drill presses are rated at roughly 350–750 W and run on 220 V, while models for large diameters and production may require 380 V. See how to choose tool power (W) and volt (V).

Table, vise and extras

A tilting and rotating table allows angled drilling, a machine vise holds the workpiece firmly, and a laser guide and depth stop speed up work. On vises: how to choose clamps, vises and holding tools.

Safety features

Look for a chuck guard, an emergency stop button and no-volt release that prevents restarting after a power cut: what is anti-restart.

Safe operation

Always clamp the workpiece in a vise and never hold it by hand, never wear gloves near the rotating chuck, tie back hair and loose clothing and wear safety glasses. Read how to work safely with stationary machines, how to choose safety glasses and how to organize a safe workplace.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare drill presses by chuck and drilling capacity, quill travel, speeds and power and choose the right model for your workshop.
