Electric Hedge Trimmers: Corded 230 V Models for Hedges

Electric Hedge Trimmers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose an electric hedge trimmer.

This section covers corded electric hedge trimmers rated at 400–800 W with 40–70 cm blades, single- or double-sided. They are designed for shaping and cutting hedges, ornamental shrubs and crowns in home gardens, country houses and landscaping work. A corded hedge trimmer is light, relatively quiet, needs no fuel and has no run-time limit, while the working area depends on the cable length. If the garden is large or there is no socket, also compare cordless options: how to choose a cordless hedge trimmer and garden shears.

What to consider when choosing an electric hedge trimmer

Type and blade design

A double-sided blade cuts in both directions and speeds up even hedge shaping, while a single-sided blade is handier near walls and for precise edges. Long-reach pole hedge trimmers let you cut the top of 2.5–3.5 m hedges without a ladder.

Motor power

400–500 W is enough for small ornamental shrubs and regular maintenance, while 600–800 W models handle dense hedges and thick shoots without the blade jamming. See how to choose tool power (W).

Blade length and tooth spacing

Blade length is usually 40–70 cm; a short blade is more precise, a long one covers wide hedges faster. A tooth spacing of 16–20 mm is meant for thin twigs and 24–30 mm for thicker shoots. For replacement blades, read how to choose spare parts for garden and forestry equipment.

Motor and protection systems

Most corded hedge trimmers have a brushed motor, while a brushless motor lasts longer and needs less maintenance. Overload protection and a fast blade brake prevent motor damage when the blade jams. Read brushed and brushless motor and what is overload protection.

Cable and extension cord

A hedge trimmer cable is usually short, 0.3–10 m, so you need a 15–30 m outdoor extension cord with at least 1.5 mm² cross-section. Always keep the cable behind the blade, over your shoulder, and a retainer will stop the plug from pulling out. See how to use an extension cord safely and extension cord cross-section, length and reel unwinding.

Electrical safety and moisture

Connect the hedge trimmer only to a socket protected by a 30 mA residual-current device and do not work on wet foliage or in the rain. After work, clean the blade and store the tool in a dry place. Read how to choose electrical protection and switching devices and how to protect a tool from dust and moisture.

Weight, rotating handle and vibration

Electric hedge trimmers usually weigh 2.5–4.5 kg. A rotating rear handle makes vertical cutting of hedge sides easier, and an anti-vibration system reduces hand fatigue during long work. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems and what is an anti-vibration system.

Safety and protective gear

A two-hand safety switch and a hand guard keep your hand away from the moving blade. Work in safety glasses and sturdy gloves, and fit the blade cover when carrying the tool. Read how to choose safety glasses and how to choose work gloves.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare electric hedge trimmers by power, blade length, tooth spacing, weight and handle design and choose the right model for your hedges and shrubs.
