Cordless Polishers: Rotary and Dual-Action (DA) Models

Cordless Polishers: Rotary and Dual-Action (DA) Models

Cordless Polishers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a polisher.

This section covers 12, 18, 20 and 40 V class cordless rotary and dual-action (DA) polishers with 75–180 mm backing pads. They are used for polishing and restoring car and motorcycle bodywork, boats and lacquered furniture, as well as stone, marble and other smooth surfaces. With no cable, they are especially convenient around a car, since no cord rubs against the paint or gets in the way — in the garage, a detailing studio or outdoors. For the general features of cordless models, read how to choose a cordless sander or polisher.

What to consider when choosing a cordless polisher

Type and purpose

A rotary polisher removes scratches and oxidation quickly and suits stone and metal, but it takes experience, while a dual-action (DA) polisher is safer on paint and suits beginners and finishing. A compact 12–18 V DA model is enough for home and car care, while detailing studios need a professional 18–40 V machine.

Speed and speed control

Rotary polishers usually run at 600–2,500 rpm, and dual-action models at 2,000–6,000 opm with an 8–21 mm orbit. Soft start, a speed dial and constant-speed electronics prevent compound spatter and paint overheating. See polisher speed control and how to choose it.

Pad diameter and polishing pads

Cordless polishers usually have 75–150 mm backing pads, and rotary models up to 180 mm: a small pad suits tight spots and curved surfaces, a large one suits doors and the bonnet. Choose foam, wool and microfibre pads for the stage: cutting, polishing or finishing. Read how to choose a polishing disc.

Battery voltage and capacity

The 12 V class is enough for compact 75 mm models, while 125–180 mm machines are usually 18–20 V or 40 V. To polish a whole car, choose a battery of 5.0 Ah or more, or keep two batteries. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Motor

A brushless motor holds its speed under pressure, runs longer per charge and stays cooler during long polishing sessions. For professional detailing it is practically a must. See brushed and brushless motor.

Weight and ergonomics

Cordless polishers weigh about 1.5–3.5 kg with battery, and a light, balanced model reduces fatigue on the vertical panels of a car. An auxiliary or D-shaped handle, rubberised housing and protective bumper help you control the machine without damaging the paint. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Safe operation

Apply compound to the pad before switching on, start at low speed, avoid edges and body lines, and remove the battery before changing the pad. Read how to use cordless tools safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless polishers by type, pad diameter, speed, orbit, voltage and weight and choose the right model for your jobs.
