A detailed buying guide: how to choose garden shears.
Garden shears are used to shape hedges and shrubs and to trim lawn edges, grass in hard-to-reach places and ornamental plants. This section includes hedge shears with long blades, models with wavy blades and telescopic handles, and grass shears, including models with swivelling blades. For large hedges, a cordless hedge trimmer is faster: how to choose a cordless hedge trimmer and garden shears.
Hedge shears with long blades and handles suit trimming hedges and shrubs, while grass shears with short blades are for lawn edges and grass around trees. A model with swivelling blades lets you work without bending your wrist.
Straight blades give an even surface, while wavy blades grip twigs and stop them slipping out. Hardened steel and a non-stick coating keep the blades sharp for longer.
Long blades trim wide surfaces quickly, while short ones are more precise for shaping. Telescopic handles let you reach the top of a hedge without a ladder.
Light shears are less tiring during long sessions. Rubber shock absorbers between the handles protect your wrists from the jolt at the end of every cut.
If the hedge is long and needs trimming several times a season, consider an electric hedge trimmer: how to choose an electric hedge trimmer. Hand shears remain best for precise shaping and small shrubs.
Wear gloves, do not trim near cables and carry the shears with the blades closed. After work, clean off sap, oil the pivot and store in a dry place: how to maintain, store and organize hand tools.
At ToolsArmenia you can choose hedge or grass shears by blades, handles and weight for hedges, shrubs and lawns.
