Petrol Hedge Trimmers: Handheld and Pole Models

Petrol Hedge Trimmers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a petrol hedge trimmer.

This section covers petrol hedge trimmers for shaping and cutting hedges, shrubs and ornamental plants and for removing young branches. The internal-combustion engine lets you work on long hedges and large gardens with no cable or mains supply, and its high power handles thicker branches too. The tools are intended for homeowners, gardeners and landscaping crews. For comparing trimmers and hedge trimmers, read how to choose a petrol trimmer, brushcutter, hedge trimmer and pole pruner.

What to consider when choosing a petrol hedge trimmer

Type and purpose

Handheld hedge trimmers suit hedges up to head height, while pole models let you cut the tops of tall hedges and distant sections without a ladder. Double-sided blades are faster for shaping, single-sided blades suit flat faces and work near the ground.

Engine displacement and power

Petrol hedge trimmers usually have a 22–26 cm³ two-stroke engine rated at 0.6–1 kW (about 0.8–1.3 hp). This is enough for dense, thick hedges, while a larger engine adds weight. See differences between two-stroke, four-stroke and diesel engines and engine displacement, power, torque and RPM: how to compare engine-powered equipment.

Blade length and tooth spacing

Blade length is usually 50–75 cm: a long blade speeds up wide hedges, a short one is more precise and lighter. A tooth spacing of 25–35 mm determines how thick a branch the tool can cut, usually up to 20–30 mm. For blades and parts: how to choose spare parts for garden and forestry equipment.

Starting and rotating handle

A manual recoil starter with primer and easy-start system needs less pulling force. A rotating rear handle lets you cut the sides and top of a hedge without twisting your wrists.

Fuel and mix

A two-stroke hedge trimmer runs on a petrol and two-stroke oil mix, usually 1:25–1:50 as specified by the manufacturer. Fresh fuel and the correct ratio protect the engine from wear. More details: fuel, engine oil and two-stroke mix: how to choose and use them correctly.

Weight and vibration

Handheld petrol hedge trimmers weigh 5–6.5 kg and pole models more, so balance and a shoulder strap matter. An anti-vibration system reduces fatigue during long work with raised arms. See what is an anti-vibration system and what is vibration level.

Noise and protective equipment

A petrol hedge trimmer reaches 95–105 dB, and cut twigs and dust can injure the eyes. Wear ear defenders, safety glasses and sturdy gloves. Read how to choose hearing protection, how to choose safety glasses and how to choose work gloves.

Safety and maintenance

Two-handed operation and a blade guard reduce injury risk, and the blade should be covered with a sheath when carried. After work, clean and oil the blades and check the gearbox, air filter and spark plug. At ToolsArmenia you can compare petrol hedge trimmers by engine size, blade length, tooth spacing, handle type and weight and choose the right model for your garden.
