Voltage Stabilizers: for Home, Boilers and Appliances, 220/380 V

Voltage Stabilizers: for Home, Boilers and Appliances, 220/380 V

Voltage stabilizers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a voltage stabilizer.

This section covers voltage stabilizers that protect household appliances, gas boilers, refrigerators, pumps, computers and production equipment from mains voltage drops and surges: single-phase 220 V and three-phase 380 V, relay, electronic (thyristor), servo-motor and inverter models for a single appliance, an apartment, a house or a site. For an overview, read what electrical equipment is and how it is classified.

What to consider when choosing a voltage stabilizer

Stabilizer type

Relay stabilizers are affordable and fast but regulate voltage in steps and click while working. Electronic (thyristor or triac) models are silent and even faster, servo-motor stabilizers deliver smooth and precise voltage, and inverter models with double conversion offer the highest accuracy and the widest range. Learn more: voltage stabilizer types: relay, electronic, servo and inverter.

Power rating and reserve

Add up the power of appliances that run at the same time, account for the starting current of motor-driven equipment (refrigerator, pump, compressor), which can be several times the rated current, and add a 20–30 % reserve. Remember that output power drops when the input voltage is low. On sizing: how to calculate voltage stabilizer power; see also what is electric current (A).

Input voltage range and accuracy

The input range shows how far the voltage can drop or rise while the stabilizer still delivers normal output: about 140–260 V is usually enough for a city grid, while a weak rural grid calls for a wide-range model. Output accuracy ranges from ±1 % to ±8 %, and electronics and boilers benefit from a more precise model. On voltage: volt (V).

Response speed and noise

Response speed shows how quickly the stabilizer corrects a voltage surge: electronic and inverter models are the fastest, while servo-motor models react more slowly to sudden surges. Noise matters in living spaces too — relay clicks and the cooling fan. See what is noise level in db.

Single-phase or three-phase

A single-phase stabilizer is designed for a 220 V supply, while on a three-phase 380 V supply you can install three single-phase stabilizers, one per phase, or one three-phase model, which is required for equipment with three-phase motors and machine tools. Read single-phase or three-phase voltage stabilizer.

Protection features

Make sure the stabilizer protects against excessive high and low voltage, overload and short circuit, and offers a start delay, which matters for refrigerator and air-conditioner compressors. On overheating protection: what is motor thermal protection; on mains protection devices: how to choose electrical protection and switching devices.

Mounting type and display

Stabilizers come in wall-mounted and floor-standing versions, and a digital display shows input and output voltage and load. Most household models are designed for a dry, heated room and are not protected against moisture. On protection ratings: what is an IP rating.

Whole-house connection

A whole-house stabilizer is connected after the meter and before the distribution board, with a circuit breaker and a bypass switch, a cable of suitable cross-section and earthing, and this work should be done by an electrician. Read how to install and safely operate a voltage stabilizer; on choosing cable: how to choose electrical cable, conduit, trunking and connectors.

Safety and ventilation

A stabilizer warms up during operation, so never cover its ventilation openings, leave free space around it and do not install it near flammable materials, in a damp basement or a dusty workshop. Read essential power tool safety rules and essential fire safety rules.

Stabilizer, UPS or generator

A stabilizer corrects the voltage but provides no power during an outage — that requires a UPS or an inverter with a battery. When using it with a generator, check compatibility, as the generator may have its own voltage regulator. See how to choose a transformer, power supply, voltage stabilizer, UPS and inverter and what is an AVR system.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare voltage stabilizers by type, power, input range, accuracy, number of phases and mounting type and choose the right model for your appliances, home or site.
