A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pneumatic ratchet wrench.
This section covers pneumatic ratchet wrenches with 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2" square drives that quickly run bolts and nuts in and out in tight, hard-to-reach places. They are widely used in car service, engine and suspension repair, equipment assembly and production work. The tool is light and powerful and has no electric motor, so there is no risk of electric shock or sparks, but it only works with an electric or petrol compressor of matching capacity. For how air tools work, read what pneumatic tools are and how they work.
Compact models with a short head suit engine bays and tight spaces, while extended-head models with a reinforced housing suit larger fasteners and intensive service work. A ratchet speeds up run-down, but final tightening should be done with a torque wrench. See how to choose wrenches, sockets, ratchets and torque tools.
Pneumatic ratchets typically use 100–200 l/min of air, and the real delivery of the compressor should be about 30–50 % higher. If air is insufficient, the tool loses torque and speed. Read how to choose an air compressor and how to calculate compressor air delivery.
Most tools are rated for a working pressure of 6.2–6.3 bar, so the compressor tank pressure should be 8 bar or more. Set the pressure with a regulator, measured at the tool inlet. See how to choose compressor working pressure.
1/4" models deliver about 20–40 N·m and suit small fasteners, 3/8" models 40–70 N·m and 1/2" models up to 100–150 N·m. Sockets must match the drive size, and free speed is usually 150–300 RPM. Read torque (N·m).
Most ratchets have a 1/4" female inlet fitted with a EURO, ORION or RAPID quick coupler. Choose a coupler that matches your hose and compressor fittings, and a hose with an inner diameter of 6–10 mm. See how to choose an air hose and connectors.
Condensate and dirt quickly wear the air motor vanes, so use a filter-water separator and a regulator. Before work, put a few drops of air tool oil into the inlet or fit a lubricator. Read how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.
A rubberised grip, comfortable paddle trigger and reverse selector reduce fatigue, and an exhaust at the bottom of the handle directs air away from the face. Noise can reach 85–95 dB, so wear ear protection and gloves. See how to choose hearing protection and how to choose work gloves.
Disconnect the air before changing sockets, check that the hose and couplings are secure and never exceed the permitted pressure. Worn vanes, seals and the ratchet mechanism can be replaced with spare parts. Read how to use pneumatic tools safely and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare pneumatic ratchet wrenches by drive size, torque, air consumption, speed and weight and choose a model that suits your jobs and compressor.
