Screwdrivers and Bits: Slotted, Phillips, TORX and Insulated

Screwdrivers and Bits: Slotted, Phillips, TORX and Insulated

Screwdrivers and Bits

A detailed buying guide: how to choose screwdrivers, hex keys and TORX keys.

This section covers hand screwdrivers: slotted (SL), Phillips (PH), Pozidriv (PZ) and TORX tips, impact screwdrivers, insulated electrician screwdrivers (VDE 1000 V), nut drivers, precision screwdrivers and sets. Tip type, size and length are chosen with filters. About electrician tools: how to choose insulated hand tools for electrical work.

What to consider when choosing a screwdriver

Tip type

The tip must match the screw head: SL for a straight slot, PH for Phillips, PZ for Pozidriv (with extra radial lines) and TORX for a star recess. The wrong tip strips the head.

Size and length

Choose the tip size (for example SL 5.5, PH2) by the screw and the shaft length (38-200 mm) by access. A short screwdriver suits tight spots, a long one deep recesses.

Insulation (VDE)

For live work use only insulated screwdrivers marked VDE 1000 V. An ordinary handle gives no protection. Read how to use hand tools safely.

Impact screwdriver

An impact screwdriver has a through shaft and a metal cap that can be struck with a hammer to loosen seized or rusted screws.

Steel and handle

CrV or S2 steel keeps the tip shape for long, a magnetic tip holds the screw, and a two-component handle does not slip in the hand. Read hand tool materials, hardness, coatings and ergonomics.

Set or single

A set includes the most needed tips and sizes, while a single screwdriver replaces a lost or worn one. Read how to choose a hand tool set.

Care

Do not use a screwdriver as a pry bar or chisel, and keep screwdrivers sorted by type. Read how to maintain, store and organize hand tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can choose a screwdriver by tip type, size, length and insulation.
