Hydraulic Cylinders and Hand Pumps: 700 bar Systems 5–100 t

Hydraulic Cylinders and Hand Pumps: 700 bar Systems 5–100 t

Hydraulic Cylinders and Hand Pumps

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a hydraulic cylinder or ram.

This section covers 700 bar hydraulic cylinders rated at 5–100 t with 15–300 mm stroke — standard, low-height, hollow-plunger and double-acting — as well as manual and foot-operated hydraulic pumps, hoses and pressure gauges for them. Together, the cylinder and pump form a modular system for lifting, pushing, pressing and spreading heavy structures without a power supply. They are used in industrial maintenance, machine shops, construction and equipment installation. Read what hydraulic tools are and how they work.

What to consider when choosing a hydraulic cylinder and hand pump

Cylinder type

Standard single-acting cylinders are spring-returned, low-height cylinders 30–60 mm tall suit confined spaces, and hollow-plunger cylinders are used with pullers and for tensioning. Double-acting cylinders have powered return and require a double-acting pump and two hoses.

Force in tonnes and margin

Cylinder force depends on piston area and pressure: at 700 bar, models of 5, 10, 20, 30, 50 or 100 t are available. Choose force with a margin of about 20 %, and when lifting with several cylinders distribute the load evenly. Read how to choose hydraulic tool load capacity and working force.

Stroke and closed height

Stroke is usually 15–300 mm, and the closed height determines whether the cylinder will fit under the load. Low cylinders with short stroke are good for the initial lift of machines and structures, while long-stroke cylinders suit pushing and pressing. A tilting saddle can be fitted to the plunger to protect it from side loads.

Hand and foot pumps

Hand pumps come in single- and two-speed versions: a two-speed pump quickly brings the plunger to the load and then switches to high pressure, reducing the number of strokes. Choose a reservoir volume (0.3–2.5 l) sufficient for the full stroke of one or several cylinders; a foot pump leaves the hands free. See how to choose a hydraulic pump and power source.

Hoses, couplers and pressure gauge

Hoses for 700 bar systems are usually 1.5–3 m long and connect with 3/8" NPT quick couplers. A pressure gauge lets you monitor pressure and calculate the actual force, and with manifolds several cylinders can run from one pump. Read how to choose hydraulic hoses, couplers, valves and pressure gauges.

Use in systems and alternatives

Cylinders and pumps are used with presses, pullers and body repair kits, so check thread and attachment compatibility. For production or heavy work, the hand pump can be replaced with an electric or petrol power unit. See how to choose a hydraulic puller and separator and how to choose a hydraulic power unit and construction hydraulic tools.

Safety, oil and spare parts

The pump relief valve limits pressure, but a lifted load must be secured immediately with mechanical supports. Use the hydraulic oil specified by the manufacturer, bleed air and check the availability of seal and coupler repair kits. Read how to use hydraulic tools safely, how to store and maintain hydraulic tools and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare hydraulic cylinders and hand pumps by force, stroke, cylinder type, pump speeds and reservoir volume and choose the right system for your work.
