Generator Batteries: How to Choose and Charge Them

Rechargeable batteries

Generators typically use standard lead-acid batteries (such as AGM or gel batteries) with a minimum capacity of 12 Ah for starting or powering equipment, while charging any other rechargeable batteries (such as AA/AAA batteries) requires a special charger connected to the generator's AC outlet.

Batteries for starting or powering a generator
Most generators are equipped with systems designed to work with specific types of batteries, typically lead-acid.

  • Type: Sealed lead-acid batteries (AGM or gel) are the most commonly used batteries. They are reliable and well-suited for engine starting or float operation.
  • Capacity: Experts recommend choosing a generator battery with a capacity of at least 12 A*h to ensure reliable operation, including in cold weather.
  • Charging principle: The generator usually has a built-in charging system for its main (starter) battery, maintaining the required voltage (in the range of 13.4 - 14.5 V).
