Portable Power Stations: LiFePO4 Battery and 230 V Inverter

Portable Power Stations: LiFePO4 Battery and 230 V Inverter

Portable Power Stations

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a portable power station.

This section covers portable power stations — units with a LiFePO4 or NMC battery and a built-in inverter that provide 230 V, USB and 12 V power without fuel or noise. They are used at country houses, on trips, in garages and on job sites, and as backup power during outages. The category suits travellers, tradespeople and home users. If you need long fuel-powered runtime, read how to choose an inverter generator.

What to consider when choosing a portable power station

Type and purpose

Compact 200–500 Wh stations are designed for smartphones, laptops and lighting, 1000–2000 Wh models for a fridge and power tools, and expandable systems of 3000 Wh or more for home backup. See how to choose a UPS or inverter for backup power.

Capacity, Wh

Capacity (Wh) shows how long the unit will run: for example, a 1000 Wh station will power a 100 W load for about 8–9 hours, allowing for inverter losses. Some models accept extra battery packs. Read how to calculate UPS runtime and battery capacity.

Inverter output and surge

Rated output is usually 300–3000 W, and surge power is 1.5–2 times higher, which matters for starting motor-driven devices. Add up the power of devices used at the same time and leave a 20–30% margin. See how to calculate required generator power.

Pure sine wave

Choose a station with a pure sine wave output: it is safe for computers, pumps, refrigerators and electronically controlled tools. A modified sine wave can cause noise and heating. Read UPS types: offline, line-interactive, online and pure sine wave.

Outlets

Check the number of 230 V sockets, USB-A and USB-C PD (60–140 W) ports, the 12 V car socket and DC outputs. To power devices away from the station, use an extension cord of suitable cross-section. See how to use an extension cord safely.

Charging methods

Stations charge from the mains, a 12 V car socket and solar panels via a built-in MPPT controller. Fast AC charging can take the battery from 0 to 80% in about 1 hour, while the solar input rating (200–1200 W) determines charging speed off-grid.

Battery chemistry and cycles

LiFePO4 batteries withstand 3000–6000 cycles and are safer, while NMC batteries are lighter but rated for 500–1000 cycles. Compared with systems built on lead-acid batteries, lithium stations are much lighter and allow deeper discharge. See lead-acid battery types (AGM, GEL, EFB) and charging modes.

UPS and pass-through charging

Pass-through charging lets you power devices while the station is charging, and UPS mode switches to battery within 10–30 ms during an outage. For servers and sensitive equipment, also compare with dedicated devices. Read how to choose a transformer, power supply, voltage stabilizer, UPS and inverter.

Weight, protection and safety

A 1000 Wh station typically weighs 10–14 kg, so look at handles or wheels. Check the BMS protection and the housing's dust and moisture protection, and use the station in a well-ventilated place. See what is an IP rating and essential power tool safety rules.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare portable power stations by capacity, inverter output, outlets, charging methods, battery type and weight and choose the right model for your needs.
