A detailed buying guide: how to choose a riding mower or garden tractor.
This section covers riding mowers and garden tractors with front or rear cutting decks and 60–120 cm cutting widths. They run on 300–700 cm³ petrol engines and are designed for lawns from 2,000 m² up to several hectares. This equipment suits large private gardens, hotels, parks and sports grounds. For smaller lawns, compare walk-behind petrol mowers: see how to choose a gasoline lawn mower.
A rider is compact, has a front deck or a tight turning radius and is handy around trees and flower beds. A garden tractor has its deck between the wheels, is more powerful and can work with a trailer and attachments. Read what motor tools and engine-powered equipment are and how to choose them.
A 60–85 cm cutting width suits areas up to 3,000–4,000 m², while 95–120 cm is for lawns over 5,000 m². A wider deck speeds up the work but needs wider passages and gates. Check the cutting height adjustment steps.
Riding mowers have single- or twin-cylinder four-stroke engines of 300–700 cm³. A twin-cylinder engine runs smoother and quieter, and a larger displacement is needed for a wide deck and slopes. Read differences between two-stroke, four-stroke and diesel engines and engine displacement, power, torque and RPM: how to compare engine-powered equipment.
A manual gearbox is simple and affordable, but you have to stop to change speed. A hydrostatic transmission adjusts speed smoothly with a pedal and is more convenient for frequent turns and slopes. Check the maximum slope the manufacturer allows.
The grass catcher usually holds 150–300 l, and a large one needs emptying less often. Mulching mode chops the grass and leaves it on the lawn as fertiliser, while side discharge is useful for long grass. It is convenient when the catcher can be emptied from the seat.
Change the engine oil and air filter regularly and sharpen the blades, and clean the deck after the season. Before winter storage, charge the battery and drain the fuel or add a stabiliser. Read fuel, engine oil and two-stroke mix: how to choose and use them correctly and how to maintain and store motor tools and engine-powered equipment.
Do not work on slopes steeper than the manufacturer allows and never carry passengers. Choose a model with a seat sensor that stops the blades when the operator stands up. Read how to safely use internal-combustion-engine tools and equipment.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare riding mowers and garden tractors by cutting width, engine, transmission and grass catcher and choose the right model for your grounds.
