Cordless Earth Augers: Drilling Holes for Fence Posts, Saplings and Piers

Cordless Earth Augers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless earth auger.

This section covers cordless earth augers on 18–20 V, 36–40 V and 2×18 V platforms. They drill 100–250 mm holes down to 0.8–1 m deep for fence posts, saplings, small foundation piers and surveys. A cordless model has no exhaust, runs quieter and starts easily. For larger volumes and stony soil, compare engine-powered models: see how to choose a petrol earth auger.

What to consider when choosing a cordless earth auger

Auger diameter and drilling depth

For fence posts and saplings, a 100–150 mm auger is usually enough, while larger piers need 200–250 mm. A standard auger is 0.8–1 m long, and an extension lets you drill deeper. Check the auger connection type and compatibility: see how to choose a tiller, cultivator, scarifier and earth auger.

Torque and speed

For an earth auger, torque matters most; cordless models usually deliver 40–120 N·m at 150–350 rpm. Two speeds let you drill dense soil at low speed and soft soil at high speed. Read torque (N·m).

Voltage, battery and platform

18–20 V models suit small holes and soft soil, while 36–40 V or 2×18 V models handle large augers and dense soil. A battery of 4–5 Ah or more gives several dozen holes per charge. Read cordless tool voltage (V), battery capacity (Ah) and what is a unified battery platform.

Motor and protection

A brushless motor runs longer and heats up less under heavy load. Overload protection, an electronic clutch and reverse for freeing a stuck auger are important. See brushed and brushless motor.

Handles and controls

Wide handles let you hold the tool steadily with both hands and reduce kickback when the auger hits a root or stone. A soft start and a safety lock-off button that prevents accidental starting are useful. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Weight and transport

Cordless earth augers usually weigh 5–10 kg without the auger, which is lighter than engine models. The low weight and lack of exhaust let you work in a greenhouse, a yard or near living areas. Check that the auger detaches easily for transport.

Safety

Before drilling, make sure there are no underground cables or pipes at the spot. Wear sturdy footwear and gloves, keep a stable stance and never clean the auger while it is turning. Read how to choose personal protective equipment and how to use cordless tools safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless earth augers by auger diameter, torque, voltage and weight and choose the right model for your soil and work.
