Air Preparation Units (FRL): Filters, Regulators and Lubricators

Air Preparation Units (FRL): Filters, Regulators and Lubricators

Air Preparation Units (FRL)

A detailed buying guide: how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.

This section covers air preparation units — filters, pressure regulators, lubricators and their combinations (filter-regulator, filter-regulator-lubricator), as well as regulators with gauges. They are installed after the compressor or in front of the tool to remove water, rust and dust from compressed air, keep pressure stable and lubricate air tools. These units extend the life of tools, spray guns and hoses and are needed in workshops, car service centres and home garages working with an electric or petrol compressor.

What to consider when choosing an air preparation unit

Configuration and installation point

A separate filter or regulator suits simple lines, a filter-regulator suits painting and blowing, and a three-part filter-regulator-lubricator suits rotary air tools. The unit is installed at the compressor outlet or 3–5 m from the tool. See how to choose an air compressor.

Filtration grade and condensate drain

General-purpose filters trap 5–40 µm particles, while painting needs fine and oil-removing filters. The condensate drain can be manual, semi-automatic or automatic and must be emptied regularly, just like the compressor tank. Read how to store and maintain an air compressor.

Regulator and gauge

A regulator usually lets you set an outlet pressure of 0.5–8 or 0.5–10 bar and keeps it stable regardless of the compressor tank pressure. The gauge should be easy to read and the regulator knob lockable. See how to choose compressor working pressure.

Lubricator and oil type

A lubricator adds a fine oil mist to the air, which impact wrenches, screwdrivers and sanders with vane motors need. Lubricators are not used for spray guns or blow-off lines. Read what pneumatic tools are and how they work.

Flow capacity and port size

The unit flow capacity (l/min) must exceed the total air consumption of the tools running at the same time, otherwise pressure will drop. Small units have 1/4" ports, while workshop units have 3/8" or 1/2". See how to calculate compressor air delivery.

Connection and mounting

Check that the unit thread and quick couplers match your hose system — EURO, ORION or RAPID. A wall bracket and modular connection make installation and later expansion easier. Read how to choose an air hose and quick couplers.

Maintenance and spare parts

The filter element, bowls and seals are replaced over time, so choose a model with available spare parts. Metal bowls or polycarbonate bowls with a guard last longer. See how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

Safe operation

Before opening a bowl or changing the filter, shut off the air and release the pressure, do not clean polycarbonate bowls with solvents, and never exceed the unit maximum pressure. Read how to use pneumatic tools safely and how to use an air compressor safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare air preparation units by configuration, filtration grade, pressure range, flow capacity and port size and choose the right unit for your compressor and tools.
