Cordless Planers: for Planing Timber, Fitting Doors and Cutting Rebates

Cordless Planers: for Planing Timber, Fitting Doors and Cutting Rebates

Cordless Planers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless planer.

This section covers cordless power planers: mostly 18–20 V models as well as 36–40 V (2×18 V) models, usually with an 82 mm planing width. They are used to fit doors and window sashes, level boards and battens, chamfer edges, cut rebates and work on site on roofs and timber structures. Having no cable is convenient on site, on a ladder and away from the workshop, so the section suits joiners and installers as well as home DIYers. For general principles, read how to choose an electric planer.

What to consider when choosing a cordless planer

Type and purpose

A handheld cordless planer is designed for on-site fitting and moderate volumes, while machines are better for thicknessing and surfacing large quantities of timber. Choose the tool class according to how often you work. See differences between professional and household power tools and how to choose a thicknesser and jointer.

Planing width and depth

The standard width is 82 mm, depth of cut per pass is 0–2 mm on 18 V models and up to 3 mm on more powerful ones, and rebate depth is 0–9 or up to 25 mm. A high drum speed (12,000–16,000 RPM) gives a smoother surface. Read what is rotational speed (RPM).

Blades

Reversible carbide blades stay sharp longer and are easy to flip, while HSS blades can be resharpened. Choose blades for the type of wood and check their compatibility with the drum. See how to choose a tool accessory for the workpiece material.

Battery voltage and capacity

A planer draws high current, especially in hardwood and on deep passes, so a 4–5 Ah battery is recommended for an 18 V model. 36–40 V models hold speed better during wide, deep planing. Read cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Platform and kit contents

If you already own batteries from the same manufacturer, choose a body-only version. Check whether the kit includes a parallel fence, rebate depth stop, spare blades, dust bag, battery and charger. See what is a unified battery platform and how to choose a battery and charger.

Brushless motor

A brushless motor planes more metres per charge and holds speed in hardwood. It also runs cooler and needs no brush maintenance. Read what is a brushless motor.

Safe operation and chip ejection

Choose a model with left or right chip ejection and connect a bag or vacuum. A parking shoe protects the blades and the surface, and always remove the battery before changing blades and wear safety glasses. See how to use cordless tools safely and how to choose safety glasses.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless planers by planing width and depth, voltage, blade type and kit contents and choose the right model for your jobs.
