Pneumatic Rivet Guns: for Blind Rivets and Rivet Nuts

Pneumatic Rivet Guns: for Blind Rivets and Rivet Nuts

Pneumatic Rivet Guns

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pneumatic rivet gun.

This section covers pneumatic and hydro-pneumatic rivet guns for setting blind rivets and rivet nuts. They are used to assemble sheet metal, ventilation ducts, roofing elements, car bodies, trailers and metal structures where a fast, reliable joint with one-sided access is needed. An air rivet gun takes far less effort than a hand riveter and is light and durable, but it works only with a suitable electric or petrol compressor.

What to consider when choosing a pneumatic rivet gun

Type and purpose

The most common type is the hydro-pneumatic gun for blind rivets, while separate models with M4–M12 threads are available for rivet nuts. How comfortable the tool is in vertical and horizontal positions depends on the body shape. See what pneumatic tools are and how they work.

Air consumption and working pressure

A rivet gun uses air only during each cycle, so average consumption is low, but pressure must stay stable within 5–7 bar. If pressure drops, the tool will not break the mandrel. Read how to calculate compressor air delivery and how to choose compressor working pressure.

Rivet diameter and nosepieces

Standard models handle 2.4–4.8 mm rivets, while heavy-duty ones go up to 6.4 mm, including steel and stainless rivets. Check that the kit includes nosepieces for your rivets and that the jaws are replaceable. See how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

Pulling force and stroke

Pulling force is usually 7–20 kN and stroke 14–20 mm: the higher they are, the larger and stronger the rivets you can set in one cycle. Force depends directly on inlet pressure, so the compressor must maintain it without drops. See how to choose an air compressor.

Mandrel collection and safety

Models with vacuum hold and a mandrel container keep the rivet in the nosepiece and collect broken mandrels that could otherwise fly out. Do not point the tool at people and never work without the container. Read how to use pneumatic tools safely.

Air inlet thread and quick coupler

Most rivet guns have a 1/4" air inlet thread fitted with a EURO, ORION or RAPID quick coupler. The coupler must match your hose system, and the hose inner diameter should be 6–8 mm. See how to choose an air hose and quick couplers.

Air preparation and maintenance

Clean, dry air protects the air cylinder and seals, and the hydraulic section needs topping up with special oil from time to time. Drain compressor condensate regularly and clean the jaws. Read how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators and how to store and maintain an air compressor.

Weight, ergonomics and protection

Rivet guns usually weigh 1.2–2 kg: a balanced body and soft grip reduce hand fatigue on long rows. Wear safety glasses and hearing protection while working. See how to choose safety glasses and how to choose hearing protection.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare pneumatic rivet guns by rivet diameter, pulling force, stroke, nosepiece set and weight and choose the right model for your jobs.
