Hydraulic Pullers: Two- and Three-Jaw 5–50 t

Hydraulic Pullers: Two- and Three-Jaw 5–50 t

Hydraulic Pullers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a hydraulic puller and separator.

This section covers manual hydraulic pullers: two- and three-jaw models with a built-in pump and 5–50 t of force, as well as pullers driven by a separate hydraulic cylinder and pump, and bearing separator sets. They are used to remove bearings, pulleys, gears, couplings and wheel hubs from shafts. A hydraulic puller generates tens of tonnes from a small hand effort without hammering, so it suits car service, truck and farm machinery repair and industrial equipment maintenance. For the working principle, see what hydraulic tools are and how they work.

What to consider when choosing a hydraulic puller

Type and design

Pullers with a built-in pump are self-contained and compact tools, while systems with a separate cylinder let you position the pump away from the job and use one cylinder with different pullers and separators. On combination models the jaws can be set in 2 or 3 positions, and some have a self-centring mechanism. Read how to choose a hydraulic cylinder or ram.

Pulling force

Manual hydraulic pullers usually deliver 5–50 t: 5–10 t is usually enough for passenger cars, 20–50 t for trucks, tractors and industrial equipment. Choose the force with a 20–30 % margin, since seized or rusted parts require more force. See how to choose hydraulic tool load capacity and working force.

Spread and reach

Check the maximum spread, usually 150–500 mm, the reach of the jaws, 100–300 mm, and the ram stroke. For small and light parts, a mechanical puller may be enough. Read what hand tools are and how to choose them.

Jaws, separators and adapters

Jaws should be made of forged, heat-treated steel, and extensions and ram adapters are desirable in the kit. Bearing separators let you grip a bearing by its inner race, and a press can also be used to push the part out. See how to choose a hydraulic press.

Pump and couplers

A built-in pump is driven by a handle or a wrench, while systems with a separate cylinder use a 700 bar hand or foot pump, a high-pressure hose and quick couplers. A pressure gauge helps control the force and avoid damaging the part. Read how to choose a hydraulic pump and power source and how to choose hydraulic hoses, couplers, valves and pressure gauges.

Safe operation

During pulling, a part or jaw can slip off with great force, so wear safety glasses and, where possible, use a safety blanket. Align the puller with the shaft axis, secure the jaws firmly and never exceed the rated force. See how to use hydraulic tools safely.

Oil and maintenance

Use the hydraulic oil specified by the manufacturer, check the level regularly and retract the ram fully after work. Keep the threaded connections of the jaws clean and lubricated. Read how to store and maintain hydraulic tools.

Case and spare parts

Pullers are usually supplied in a metal case or on a trolley together with jaws, extensions and adapters. Check the availability of spare jaws, seals and ram tips. See how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare hydraulic pullers by force, number of jaws, spread, reach and kit contents and choose the right model for your machinery.
