A detailed buying guide: how to choose a petrol wood chipper.
This section covers petrol wood chippers — machines that turn branches, prunings, leaves and other garden plant waste into wood chips or fine material. The chips can be used as mulch, compost or fuel, and the volume of waste is reduced several times over. The internal-combustion engine allows work in gardens, parks and woodland areas without mains power. The category is intended for gardeners, farmers and landscaping services.
Knife chippers cut branches into chips, while hammer models shred leaves, grass and thin twigs. Combined models have two separate hoppers — one for branches and one for soft waste. See what motor tools and engine-powered equipment are and how to choose them.
Petrol chippers use a four-stroke engine rated at 6.5–15 hp (5–11 kW). Thick and green branches need a more powerful engine so the mechanism does not jam. Read differences between two-stroke, four-stroke and diesel engines and engine displacement, power, torque and RPM: how to compare engine-powered equipment.
Petrol chippers usually handle branches 50–100 mm in diameter. Choose a model whose maximum diameter is slightly larger than the typical branches in your garden, since working at the limit is slow and wears the knives.
Knives mounted on a disc or drum produce even chips and need regular sharpening or turning. Free-swinging hammers are more tolerant of soft waste and soil residue.
A wide hopper makes loading bushy waste easier, and self-feeding reduces operator effort. Check the discharge chute direction, wheel size and weight, which is usually 60–150 kg.
Most models have a manual recoil starter, and powerful ones also offer electric start. A four-stroke engine runs on straight petrol, and the oil level should be checked before every job. Read fuel, engine oil and two-stroke mix: how to choose and use them correctly.
Chipper noise exceeds 100 dB, and chips can be thrown back out of the hopper. Work with safety glasses or a face shield, ear protection and sturdy gloves. Read how to choose safety glasses, how to choose hearing protection and how to choose work gloves.
Never push branches into the hopper by hand, do not feed waste containing stones or metal, and switch off the engine if it jams. Sharpen the knives regularly and check the belt and the availability of knives and filters. See how to safely use internal-combustion-engine tools and equipment, how to maintain and store motor tools and engine-powered equipment and how to choose spare parts for gasoline and diesel engines.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare petrol wood chippers by maximum branch diameter, cutting system, engine power and weight and choose the right model for your garden.
