A detailed buying guide: how to choose an electric snow shovel.
This section covers mains-powered handheld electric snow shovels, usually with a 25–30 cm clearing width and about 1–1.3 kW of power. You hold the shovel with both hands while a rotating auger picks up the snow and throws it to the side. Electric snow shovels are handy for steps, porches, entrances and narrow paths with up to 15 cm of snow. They are light and suit owners of private houses, country cottages and small commercial premises.
An electric snow shovel is designed for light snow and small areas where a large snow blower is awkward or does not fit. If you need to clear a whole yard or driveway, or the snow is often deeper than 15 cm, a walk-behind snow blower is the better choice. See how to choose an electric snow blower and how to choose a cordless snow blower.
Electric snow shovels usually have a 25–30 cm clearing width and an intake height of up to about 15 cm. A narrow shovel suits steps and porches, while a 30 cm width speeds up clearing paths. On wet, dense or icy snow the shovel becomes much less effective.
Electric snow shovels usually have a 1–1.3 kW motor, which is enough for fresh, loose snow. A more powerful model clogs less and throws snow further but is slightly heavier. Read how to choose tool power (W).
Electric snow shovels usually throw snow 3–6 m. Check whether you can change the throw direction with a deflector so that snow does not land on doors and windows. Rubber or plastic auger paddles do not damage paving stones or step cladding.
An electric snow shovel needs a frost-resistant outdoor extension cord whose insulation does not stiffen or crack in the cold. Secure the cord in the strain-relief hook on the handle so the plug does not pull out, and connect the shovel to a circuit protected by a residual current device. See how to use an extension cord safely and how to inspect a power cord and plug.
The shovel is in direct contact with snow and water, so double insulation and splash protection for the motor and switch are important. After use, clear the snow off the housing and dry the tool. Read what is an IP rating.
Most electric snow shovels weigh 5–8 kg, so an adjustable auxiliary handle and a long main handle that reduce strain on your back are important. Some models have a folding or removable handle for storage. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.
Never clear a clogged auger with your hand or foot: first switch the shovel off and unplug it. Choose a model with a switch lock-off against accidental starting and work in non-slip footwear, gloves and safety glasses. At ToolsArmenia you can compare electric snow shovels by clearing width, power, throw distance and weight and choose the right model for your steps, porch and paths.
