Cordless Rotary Tools: Engravers and Multi-Tools 3.6–20 V

Cordless Rotary Tools: Engravers and Multi-Tools 3.6–20 V

Cordless Rotary Tools

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless rotary tool.

This section covers cordless rotary tools — compact high-speed multi-tools for engraving, fine sanding, polishing, cutting and drilling. They are used on wood, metal, plastic, glass and stone for model making, jewellery and craft work, car servicing and small repairs. The category includes compact 3.6–12 V models and 18–20 V platform rotary tools. For general selection principles, read how to choose a rotary tool or engraver: collet, RPM, power, and accessory compatibility.

What to consider when choosing a cordless rotary tool

Type and size

Pen-style 3.6–4 V engravers with a built-in battery suit fine engraving and craft work. 12 V models are more versatile, while 18–20 V platform rotary tools have more power for cutting and grinding but are heavier. See differences between professional and household power tools.

Speed range and control

Cordless rotary tools usually run at 5,000–35,000 RPM. Low speeds suit plastic and polishing, high speeds suit metal engraving and cutting, so smooth or stepped speed control is important. Read what is rotational speed (RPM).

Collet and chuck

The most common collets are 3.2 mm and 2.4 mm, and some kits also include a 0.8–3.2 mm keyless chuck. Make sure the collet matches the shank diameter of your accessories. See types of chucks and their applications.

Battery and platform

Models with a built-in battery charge via USB-C, while rotary tools with a removable battery can run on packs from other tools of the same platform. A 2.0 Ah battery is usually enough, as the tool draws little energy. Read cordless tool voltage (V), battery capacity (Ah) and what is a unified battery platform.

Motor

Rotary tools with a brushless motor run longer per charge, heat up less and hold speed more steadily under load. Brushed models are simpler and suit occasional use. See brushed and brushless motor.

Accessories and flexible shaft

A kit may include 20–150 accessories — burrs, grinding stones, cutting discs, brushes and felt polishing wheels — as well as a flexible shaft for detailed work. For polishing accessories, read how to choose a polishing disc.

Ergonomics and vibration

A slim body, rubberised grip and a weight of 300–600 g let you hold the tool like a pen and work for long periods without fatigue. Low vibration is important for precise engraving. See what is vibration level.

Safe operation

Do not exceed the accessory's rated speed, tighten the collet securely and wear safety glasses, plus a dust mask for dusty work. Read how to use cordless tools safely and how to choose personal protective equipment.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless rotary tools by voltage, speed range, collet size, battery, motor type and accessory kit and choose the right model for your work.
