A detailed buying guide: how to choose a scythe and sickle.
Sickles and scythes are used to cut grass, nettles, weeds and cereals where machinery cannot reach or the job is small. This section includes sickles for hand cutting, complete scythes with snaths, replacement blades and sharpening accessories. For large areas, a petrol trimmer is faster: how to choose a petrol trimmer, brushcutter, hedge trimmer and pole pruner.
A sickle suits small areas, bed edges and gathering grass by hand, while a scythe is for meadows and slopes where you mow standing. For quiet work without fuel, a cordless trimmer is also an option: how to choose a cordless grass trimmer.
A short blade (50-60 cm) suits dense grass and uneven ground, while a long one (70-90 cm) is for flat meadows. A hardened steel blade holds its edge for a long time and is easy to peen.
The snath should match your height, and the grips should be set to the length of your arms. A correctly adjusted scythe works through the rotation of your body rather than arm strength.
Scythes and sickles need to be honed with a whetstone during work and peened from time to time. A blunt blade tears the grass and requires much more effort.
A thin blade suits soft grass, while a thicker, shorter blade is for tough weeds, nettles and brush. Damp grass is easier to cut in the early morning.
The blade is very sharp, so wear sturdy gloves: how to choose work gloves, carry the scythe with the blade covered and keep it away from children. After the season, oil the blade and store it in a dry place: how to maintain, store and organize hand tools.
At ToolsArmenia you can choose a sickle, scythe, replacement blade or whetstone for cutting grass, weeds and meadows.
