Vertical Band Saws: for Wood, Plastic, Meat and Bone

Vertical Band Saws: for Wood, Plastic, Meat and Bone

Vertical band saws

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a vertical band saw.

This section covers mains-powered vertical band saws for curved and straight cuts in wood, plywood, plastic, acrylic and soft non-ferrous metals, as well as food-processing models for cutting meat, bone and frozen fish: compact benchtop and floor-standing saws for workshops, production shops and butcher shops. For an overview, read what electrical equipment is and how it is classified.

What to consider when choosing a vertical band saw

Purpose and material

Choose the saw for the material: high-speed saws suit wood and plastic, non-ferrous metals need low speeds and a metal-cutting blade, and meat and bone call for food-processing models with a stainless or food-safe housing that is easy to wash.

Throat and cutting height

The throat (distance from the blade to the frame) sets the maximum workpiece width, while cutting height sets how thick a piece you can cut or resaw. For food models, table size and a sliding carriage also matter.

Blade

Blade length must match the saw, while width, tooth pitch and type are chosen for the material and job: a narrow blade suits curves, a wide one straight cuts, and meat and bone require special food-grade blades. On compatibility: how to check tool accessory compatibility.

Speed and power

Several blade speeds let you work with different materials, while more power matters for thick, hard stock and bone. Household models run on 220 V, while production models may require 380 V. See what is rotational speed (RPM), how to choose tool power (W) and volt (V).

Table, fence and stability

A tilting table, a rip fence and blade guide bearings ensure accurate cuts, while a rigid frame reduces vibration. See what is vibration level.

Sawdust, dust and cleaning

When cutting wood and plastic, connect a vacuum to the dust port — see how to choose a construction vacuum cleaner — and wear a respirator: how to choose a respirator. Food models must be cleaned after each use according to the manufacturer’s hygiene requirements.

Safe operation

Lower the upper blade guide close to the workpiece, keep your hands away from the blade, feed small pieces with a push stick or carriage and wear safety glasses. Read how to work safely with stationary machines, how to choose safety glasses and how to organize a safe workplace.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare vertical band saws by purpose, throat, cutting height, blade size, speed and power and choose the right model for your workshop, production shop or butcher shop.
