Wrenches and Sockets for Nuts and Bolts

Wrenches and Sockets

A detailed buying guide: how to choose wrenches, sockets, ratchets and torque tools.

This section covers hand wrenches for turning nuts and bolts: open-end, ring, combination, ratcheting and adjustable spanners, sockets, extensions, T-handle and cross wrenches, and wrench sets. They are needed in car service, mechanics, plumbing and everyday repairs. General guidance: what hand tools are and how to choose them.

What to consider when choosing wrenches

Type of wrench

A combination spanner is open at one end and ring at the other, a ratcheting spanner turns without being removed, an adjustable wrench fits different sizes, and sockets work quickly in deep recesses.

Size

The wrench size must match the nut exactly (mm or inch), otherwise the flats get rounded. The most common sizes are 8-19 mm.

Steel

Chrome vanadium (CrV) steel is strong and does not bend under load, and chrome plating protects against rust. Read hand tool materials, hardness, coatings and ergonomics.

Set or single

A set is better value and includes the most needed sizes, while a single wrench suits a specific job. About tools for car service: how to choose hand tools for automotive and mechanical service.

Safety

Do not extend a wrench with a pipe or strike it with a hammer. Pull the wrench towards you rather than pushing it. Read how to use hand tools safely.

Care

Clean oil off the wrenches and store them in an organiser or case by size. Read how to maintain, store and organize hand tools.
