A detailed buying guide: how to choose an electric pressure washer.
This section covers mains-powered electric pressure washers for cleaning cars, bikes, patios, paving, fences, facades, garden furniture and construction machinery: compact household models, semi-professional washers with a metal pump and professional 220/380 V washers for car washes and industrial sites, including hot-water models. For an overview, read what electrical equipment is and how it is classified.
Household washers suit occasional cleaning of a car, bike or yard, semi-professional models suit frequent use and larger areas, while professional washers are built for car washes and daily machinery cleaning with long continuous operation. Hot-water models remove oil and grease more effectively. If there is no mains power, choose an engine-driven model: how to choose an engine-powered pressure washer, sprayer and mist blower.
Pressure (bar) determines how strongly the jet lifts dirt, while flow rate (l/h) determines how fast it is rinsed away. Around 110–140 bar and 350–450 l/h is enough for a car, while paving, facades and machinery are better served by 150 bar or more and 500 l/h or more. Compare working pressure, not only maximum pressure — see what is working pressure. Read also: what is performance or output.
Household washers usually have a universal (brushed) motor and an axial pump with a plastic or aluminium head, while professional models use an induction motor and a crankshaft pump with a brass head and ceramic plungers that withstand long workloads. Learn more about pressure washer pump and motor types and what is a brushed motor.
Most washers connect to the mains water supply with a garden hose, and the permitted inlet water temperature is usually up to 40 °C. Self-priming models can draw water from a barrel or tank, and an inlet filter protects the pump from sand. Read how to connect a pressure washer to a water supply.
An adjustable fan nozzle suits delicate surfaces, a rotary (turbo) nozzle tackles stubborn dirt and paving, and a foam lance or detergent tank enables touchless car washing. Optional accessories include a surface cleaner, brushes and a pipe-cleaning hose. Guide: how to choose pressure washer nozzles and accessories.
Household and semi-professional washers run on 220 V mains at roughly 1.4–3 kW, while powerful professional models may require 380 V. Make sure the socket and circuit breaker can handle the washer current (on voltage: volt (V)), and use an extension cord only with a suitable cross-section and moisture protection: how to use an extension cord safely.
The Total Stop system switches the motor off when you release the gun trigger, saving energy and extending pump life. Motor thermal protection matters too — see what is motor thermal protection — as does a high level of splash protection: what is an IP rating.
High-pressure hoses are usually 5–10 m long, and a steel-braided hose lasts longer. Wheels, a hose reel and on-board accessory storage make moving and storing the washer easier, and induction-motor washers usually run quieter. See what is noise level in db.
Never aim the jet at people, animals, electrical appliances or sockets, do not wash tyres from too close, and wear safety glasses. Connect the washer to a circuit protected by a residual current device and never use flammable liquids. Read how to use and maintain a pressure washer safely and essential power tool safety rules.
Clean the inlet filter and nozzles regularly, drain water from the pump and hose after use, and store the washer above freezing in winter, as frozen water damages the pump. For replacing worn seals and pump parts, see how to choose spare parts for pumps and pressure washers; for storage, see how to store power tools correctly.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare pressure washers by pressure, flow rate, pump and motor type, power supply and included accessories and choose the right model for your car, home, yard or business.
