Pneumatic Drills: 10 and 13 mm Chuck Air Drills for Metal and Wood

Pneumatic Drills

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pneumatic drill.

This section covers pneumatic drills — pistol-grip and angle models with 10 and 13 mm chucks — for drilling holes in metal, wood and plastic and for removing spot welds during body repair. They are used in car service, metalworking and production lines where long, continuous work is needed. An air drill is light, does not overheat and poses no risk of electric shock or sparks, but it needs an electric or petrol compressor of matching capacity. For more on air tools, read what pneumatic tools are and how they work.

What to consider when choosing a pneumatic drill

Type, speed and reverse

Pistol-grip models are versatile, angle models suit tight spaces, and spot-weld drills have a clamp and depth stop. Free speed is usually 1,800–2,800 RPM, and reverse helps free a jammed bit. See what is rotational speed (RPM).

Chuck

The most common is a 10 mm chuck for light work, while a 13 mm chuck takes larger bits and offers higher torque. Models come with keyed and keyless chucks. Read types of chucks and their applications.

Drill bits

Use HSS bits for metal and properly ground wood bits for timber. The bit diameter must not exceed the maximum allowed for the chuck and the tool. See how to choose a metal drill bit and how to choose a wood drill bit.

Air consumption and compressor

Air drills consume about 110–200 l/min, and for long continuous drilling the compressor needs a reserve. Choose a compressor whose real delivery is about 30–50 % higher than the tool consumption. Read how to choose an air compressor and how to calculate compressor air delivery.

Working pressure

The rated working pressure is 6.2–6.3 bar: when pressure drops, the drill loses speed and torque. Set the pressure with a regulator at the tool inlet. See how to choose compressor working pressure.

Inlet, coupler and air preparation

The tools have a 1/4" inlet for a EURO, ORION or RAPID coupler and work with a hose of 8 mm inner diameter or more. A filter, regulator and lubricator protect the air motor from wear. Read how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.

Ergonomics and noise

A light aluminium or composite body, variable-speed trigger and exhaust through the bottom of the handle are comfortable during long work. Noise can exceed 85 dB, so wear ear protection. See how to choose hearing protection.

Safety and spare parts

Clamp the workpiece securely, disconnect the air when changing bits and never leave the key in the chuck. Worn vanes, bearings and the chuck can be replaced with spare parts. Read how to use pneumatic tools safely and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare pneumatic drills by chuck size, speed, reverse, air consumption and weight and choose a model that suits your jobs and compressor.
