Cordless Pruning Shears: for Trees, Vines and Shrubs

Cordless Pruning Shears

A detailed buying guide: how to choose cordless pruning shears.

This section covers cordless pruning shears in the 12 V, 16 V and 18–20 V classes with a built-in or interchangeable platform battery, as well as professional models with a backpack or belt-mounted battery. They are designed for pruning fruit trees, grapevines, shrubs and ornamental plants with branches up to about 25–45 mm in diameter. Having no cable and a powered drive let you make hundreds of cuts without hand fatigue in the garden, vineyard or on the farm. For hedge trimmers and garden shears, read how to choose a cordless hedge trimmer and garden shears.

What to consider when choosing cordless pruning shears

Type and purpose

Household models suit occasional pruning in a home garden, while professional models are built for full-day work in vineyards and orchards. The latter often have an external battery and stronger blades. See differences between professional and household power tools.

Maximum cutting diameter

Compact 12–16 V models cut branches up to 20–28 mm, while 18–20 V and professional models handle 30–45 mm. Choose a model whose maximum diameter slightly exceeds the typical branches in your garden. Read how to choose a cordless tool.

Blades and opening adjustment

Blades made of SK5 or similar hard steel stay sharp longer, and replaceable blades extend the tool’s service life. Adjustable opening lets you cut thin branches faster. See how to choose spare parts for garden and forestry equipment.

Voltage and battery capacity

A built-in 2–2.5 Ah battery is usually enough for several hundred cuts, while professional backpack batteries provide 6–8 hours of work. Higher voltage matters for thick, hard branches. Read cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Platform and kit contents

Models with an interchangeable 18–20 V battery can be bought body-only and shared with other garden tools on the same platform. Built-in battery models are lighter but cannot work while charging. See what is a unified battery platform and how to choose a battery and charger.

Brushless motor

A brushless motor gives faster cuts, more cuts per charge and less heating during long sessions. In professional models it is practically standard. Read what is a brushless motor.

Ergonomics and weight

The handheld unit usually weighs 0.6–1.2 kg and should sit comfortably in the palm with a non-slip grip. Low vibration and a soft trigger reduce wrist fatigue. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems and what is vibration level.

Safety

Choose a model with two-step activation or a safety lock and keep your fingers, especially those of the other hand, away from the blades. Wear cut-resistant gloves. Read how to use cordless tools safely and how to choose work gloves.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless pruning shears by cutting diameter, voltage, battery type, blades and weight and choose the right model for your garden.
