Pneumatic Rotary Hammers: Handheld Models for Concrete, Brick and Stone

Pneumatic Rotary Hammers: Handheld Models for Concrete, Brick and Stone

Pneumatic Rotary Hammers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a handheld pneumatic rotary hammer.

This section covers handheld pneumatic rotary hammers, light percussion tools for drilling holes of roughly 6–40 mm in concrete, brick and stone for anchors, plugs, pipes and cables. They are used on construction sites, in workshops and in production, especially where electricity is unsafe or unavailable but a compressor is present: in wet areas, explosion-risk zones, on ships and steel structures. The tool is light and durable, does not overheat, produces no sparks and carries no risk of electric shock, but it needs an electric or petrol compressor with matching output.

What to consider when choosing a pneumatic rotary hammer

Type and purpose

Light pneumatic rotary hammers are designed for hammer drilling, and some models also have a chiselling mode for removing tiles, plaster and thin layers of concrete. Choose a model by the job, such as installation holes, anchoring or renovation, and keep in mind that mining rock drills are a separate class of tool. See what pneumatic tools are and how they work.

Drilling diameter and material

The lightest models suit 6–20 mm holes in concrete and brick, while heavier pneumatic rotary hammers drill up to 30–40 mm in concrete and natural stone. Choose the tool by the diameter you use most often and the hardness of the material, with some reserve. Read how to choose drill-bit diameter and length.

Shank and chuck type

Pneumatic rotary hammers use SDS Plus-type or hex-shank bits, which change quickly and transfer the blow well. Buy bits and chisels that match the shank of the tool and check the condition of the retainer. See differences between SDS plus, SDS max, and HEX systems.

Impact energy, blow rate and rotation

Handheld pneumatic rotary hammers usually deliver 2–6 J per blow at 2,500–4,000 blows/min, with a rotation speed of 300–600 rpm. Higher energy speeds up drilling in hard concrete but increases weight and air consumption. Read what is impact energy (J) and what is impact rate.

Air consumption and compressor

Handheld pneumatic rotary hammers use about 200–450 l/min of air at a working pressure of 6.2 bar, so the real output of the compressor should exceed this figure by 30–50%. For long jobs choose an electric or petrol compressor with a large receiver. See how to choose an air compressor and how to calculate compressor air delivery.

Inlet, hose and air preparation

Pneumatic rotary hammers usually have a 1/4" or 3/8" inlet thread and work best with an 8–10 mm inner-diameter hose and a EURO, ORION or RAPID quick coupler. The percussion mechanism needs dry, filtered and lubricated air, supplied by an in-line lubricator or a few drops of oil before each job. Read how to choose an air hose and quick couplers and how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.

Weight, vibration and protection

Handheld pneumatic rotary hammers weigh about 2–6 kg, and a rubberised grip, an auxiliary side handle and vibration damping reduce hand fatigue. Drilling concrete produces hazardous dust, so wear a respirator, safety glasses, ear protection and gloves. See what is vibration level and how to choose personal protective equipment.

Safety, maintenance and spare parts

Disconnect the air before changing bits, check the hose couplings and never run the tool without a secured bit. After work drain the condensate, lubricate the tool regularly and replace a worn piston, vanes, seals and retainer with spare parts. Read how to use pneumatic tools safely and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare handheld pneumatic rotary hammers by drilling diameter, shank type, impact energy, air consumption and weight and choose a model that suits your jobs and compressor.
