Cordless Die Grinders: for Deburring, Grinding and Polishing Metal

Cordless Die Grinders: for Deburring, Grinding and Polishing Metal

Cordless Die Grinders

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless die grinder.

This section covers cordless die grinders: compact 12 V and more powerful 18–20 V models with a collet for burrs, mounted points, flap wheels and small cut-off wheels. They are used to clean welds, remove burrs, finish holes and grind and polish metal, wood and plastic in hard-to-reach places. Without a cable, the tool is handy in car repair, metalworking workshops, installation work and for the home DIYer. For general principles, read how to choose a cordless tool.

What to consider when choosing a cordless die grinder

Type and purpose

12 V models are light and suit fine work and small parts, while 18–20 V models handle welds and intensive metalworking. There are standard versions and extended-neck models for hard-to-reach areas. See differences between professional and household power tools.

Collet and speed

Common collets are 6 mm and 1/4" (6.35 mm), with 3 or 8 mm on some models, and maximum speed is usually 20,000–30,000 RPM. The rated speed of the accessory must be higher than the tool speed. Read straight / die grinder accessory mount, RPM, and diameter and what is rotational speed (RPM).

Accessories and compatibility

Carbide burrs suit fast stock removal in metal and wood, mounted points and flap wheels suit cleaning and grinding, and felt wheels suit polishing. Choose accessories by shank diameter and material. See how to choose a grinding disc and how to check tool accessory compatibility.

Battery voltage and capacity

A 2–3 Ah battery is enough for short operations and keeps the tool light, while 4–5 Ah is better for long grinding sessions or larger burrs. Voltage determines how well the tool holds speed under load. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Platform and kit contents

Die grinders are often sold as body-only tools to run on 12 V or 18–20 V batteries you already own. Check whether collets, spanners and a case are included. Read what is a unified battery platform.

Brushless motor

Brushless models are more compact, run longer per charge and hold speed better. They also run cooler during long grinding work. See what is a brushless motor.

Speed control and switch

Speed control lets you work at low speed on plastics and when polishing and at high speed on metal. A paddle switch with lock-off and an electronic brake improve safety. Read what is speed control.

Safe operation

Clamp the workpiece, insert the accessory at least 10 mm deep into the collet and always wear safety glasses or a face shield. Remove the battery before changing accessories. See how to use cordless tools safely and how to choose safety glasses.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless die grinders by voltage, collet size, speed, motor type and kit contents and choose the right model for your jobs.
