Extension Cords and Cable Reels: for Home, Workshop and Site

Extension Cords and Cable Reels: for Home, Workshop and Site

Extension cords and cable reels

A detailed buying guide: how to choose sockets, plugs, extension leads and power strips.

This section covers extension cords and power strips for the home, office, workshop, garden and construction site: household and heavy-duty extension cords, surge protectors, 220 V and 380 V cable reels, and models with earthed, splash-protected sockets for power tools and equipment. For an overview, read what electrical equipment is and how it is classified.

What to consider when choosing an extension cord or cable reel

Type and application

A household extension cord or power strip suits the home and office, a surge protector shields computers and electronics from mains noise and voltage spikes, while a cable reel or heavy-duty extension cord is designed for power tools, pumps and equipment in workshops, gardens and on site. Read surge protector or power strip: how to choose.

Rated current and power

Check the current and power the extension cord is rated for, such as 10 A (about 2.2 kW) or 16 A (about 3.5 kW), and never connect more powerful appliances or several high-power loads at once. On current: what is electric current (A).

Cross-section, length and reel

The longer the cord and the higher the load, the larger the conductor cross-section should be (for example 1.5 or 2.5 mm²); otherwise the voltage drops and the cord heats up. A cord wound on a reel heats up much faster, so fully unwind it for high-power appliances. Learn more: extension cord cross-section, length and reel unwinding.

Cable sheath and operating temperature

A flexible rubber-sheathed cable withstands frost, abrasion and mechanical stress and suits construction sites and outdoor work, while ordinary PVC cord is mainly designed for indoor use. On cables: how to choose electrical cable, conduit, trunking and connectors.

Sockets, earthing and moisture protection

Choose the number of sockets you need, a model with earth contacts and, if needed, sockets with a switch and child-safety shutters. For outdoor work, choose sockets with covers, for example rated IP44. See what is an IP rating and what is insulation class.

Overload protection

Cable reels often have a thermal cut-out that breaks the circuit on overheating, and some models have a built-in residual current device or fuse. On mains protection devices: how to choose electrical protection and switching devices.

Inspection and storage

Before each use, check the cord sheath, plug and sockets for damage, and never use a damaged extension cord. Read how to inspect a power cord and plug and what to do if a power cord is damaged; on storage: how to store power tools correctly.

Safe use

Never daisy-chain extension cords, never run a cord through doors, windows or under carpets, and unplug it after work. Read how to use an extension cord safely, essential fire safety rules and essential power tool safety rules.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare extension cords and cable reels by length, cross-section, rated power, number of sockets and protection and choose the right model for your home, workshop or construction site.
