Cordless Reciprocating Saws: for Wood, Metal and Demolition

Cordless Reciprocating Saws: for Wood, Metal and Demolition

Cordless Reciprocating Saws

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless reciprocating saw.

This section covers cordless reciprocating saws: full-size two-handed models and compact one-handed mini saws for 12, 18, 20 and 40 V class platforms. They are designed for cutting wood, nail-embedded boards, metal pipes, profiles and plastic, for demolition work and for pruning branches in the garden. Being cable-free is especially convenient on job sites, in plumbing work and in hard-to-reach places.

What to consider when choosing a cordless reciprocating saw

Type and purpose

Full-size reciprocating saws are built for demolition and cutting thick timber and pipes, while one-handed mini models suit pruning, tight spaces and overhead work. Household models suit home and garden use, professional ones handle daily workloads. See differences between professional and household power tools.

Stroke, rate and cutting capacity

Stroke length on full-size models is usually 26–32 mm, on mini saws 12–22 mm, with stroke rates up to 2500–3200 SPM. Cutting capacity can reach 150–250 mm in wood and 50–130 mm in metal pipe. Read how to choose a reciprocating saw: blade, stroke length, stroke rate, and cutting capacity.

Blades and blade clamp

Reciprocating saws use universal-shank blades fitted with a tool-free quick clamp. Choose blade length and tooth pitch to suit the material: wood, nail-embedded wood, metal or branches. See how to choose the correct accessory size.

Battery voltage and capacity

12 V mini saws are light and suit pruning and delicate work, while full-size 18–20 V and 40 V models are for demolition and metal. A 4–6 Ah or larger battery is recommended for heavy cutting. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Platform and kit

Reciprocating saws are often sold body-only, which pays off if you already own batteries of the same platform. Check whether blades, a case and a battery are included. Read what is a unified battery platform.

Brushless motor

A brushless motor runs longer per charge and holds stroke rate better when cutting metal or thick timber. A variable-speed trigger allows a smooth start to the cut. See brushed and brushless motor.

Vibration, weight and ergonomics

A reciprocating saw produces noticeable vibration, so an anti-vibration system and rubberised front grip reduce fatigue. Full-size models weigh about 3–4.5 kg with a battery, mini saws 1.3–2 kg. See what is vibration level and tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Safe operation

Press the shoe against the material while cutting, hold the saw with both hands and check the cutting area for cables and pipes. Remove the battery before changing the blade and wear safety glasses. Read how to use cordless tools safely and essential power tool safety rules.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless reciprocating saws by size, stroke length and rate, cutting capacity, voltage and motor type and choose the right model for your jobs.
