A detailed buying guide: how to choose a random orbital sander.
This section covers 12, 18 and 20 V class cordless random orbital sanders with 125 and 150 mm pads. They are used for sanding wood, paint, varnish, filler and plastic, restoring furniture, doors and windows, and preparing car bodywork. With no cable, they are especially convenient on large surfaces, stairs and job sites, and the range suits both home and garden use and the workshop. For the general features of cordless models, read how to choose a cordless sander or polisher.
A random orbital sander rotates and oscillates at the same time, so it removes material quickly and leaves an even surface without visible swirl marks. A compact 12–18 V model is enough for home renovation and furniture, while a workshop, joinery or car refinishing calls for a professional 18–20 V machine.
Cordless models usually have a 125 mm pad, with 150 mm models for large surfaces, and an orbit of 2–5 mm: a larger orbit removes material faster, a smaller one leaves a finer finish. The oscillation rate is typically 8,000–12,000 opm, and speed control helps with varnish and plastic. See random orbital sander pad diameter and orbit size.
Discs attach by hook-and-loop, and their holes must line up with the pad holes: 8 or 6+1 holes for 125 mm and 6–15 for 150 mm. Check for a dust bag or box and a vacuum port: good dust extraction extends disc life and keeps the surface clean.
The 12 V class is enough for light jobs, while 18–20 V suits long sanding sessions and 150 mm pads. For large surfaces, choose a 4.0–5.0 Ah battery or keep a spare. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).
A brushless motor keeps its oscillation rate under load, runs longer per charge and is less affected by dust. This matters most for daily professional sanding. See brushed and brushless motor.
Sanding sessions are long, so low vibration, a weight of 1.3–2.2 kg with battery and a comfortable palm grip matter. A pad brake prevents the disc from spinning out of control when it touches the surface. See what is vibration level.
Wear a respirator and safety glasses when sanding, especially old paint and varnish, and remove the battery before changing a disc. Read how to use cordless tools safely.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless random orbital sanders by pad diameter, orbit, oscillation rate, voltage and dust extraction and choose the right model for your jobs.
