A detailed buying guide: how to choose a hydraulic knockout punch.
This section covers manual hydraulic knockout punches rated at 8–15 t with an integrated or separate hand pump, as well as punch and die sets, usually for round holes of 16–63 mm. They punch clean, burr-free holes in steel sheet up to 2.5–3 mm thick for cable entries and glands in electrical panels and junction boxes. These tools are essential for electricians, panel builders and ventilation and automation installers. More details: how to choose hydraulic cutters, crimpers and punching tools.
Knockout punches with an integrated pump are compact and convenient for on-site work on a panel or box, while models with a separate hand or foot pump handle larger diameters with less effort. Some rams can also be connected to a cordless or electric pump, which is convenient for production work. See how to choose a hydraulic pump and power source.
Models rated at 8–10 t usually punch holes up to 40–60 mm in 2–2.5 mm steel, while 15 t models punch holes up to 63–114 mm and sheet up to 3 mm. For stainless steel, the permissible thickness is about half, so choose force with a margin. Read how to choose hydraulic tool load capacity and working force.
A typical set includes 16, 20, 25, 32, 40, 50 and 63 mm punches and dies for metric cable glands, and some sets also offer PG or inch sizes and square shapes. Check that the punches are made of hardened tool steel and match the draw stud size (usually 3/8" and 3/4").
For the draw stud, a 10–12 mm pilot hole is drilled first (up to 19–20 mm for large punches), for which a step drill or a standard metal drill bit is convenient. An accurately centred pilot hole gives a clean edge and protects the punch from misalignment. See how to choose a metal drill bit.
Models with a separate pump operate at 700 bar and connect via a flexible hose with quick couplers, allowing the ram to be placed in tight spots. Check the hose length (usually 1.5–2 m), the coupler standard and compatibility with other 700 bar rams. Read how to choose hydraulic hoses, couplers, valves and pressure gauges.
An internal relief valve limits pressure, and when working you should wear safety glasses and not exceed the sheet thickness specified for the punch. Manual models need no power supply, and for high volumes you can consider cordless knockout punches. See how to use hydraulic tools safely and how to choose a cordless press and cable cutting tool.
Clean punches and dies of metal debris, lubricate the draw studs and check the hydraulic oil level periodically. Check the availability of individual punches, draw studs and seal repair kits. Read how to store and maintain hydraulic tools and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare hydraulic knockout punches by force, pump type, punch diameters, maximum sheet thickness and set contents and choose the right model for your installation work.
