A detailed buying guide: how to choose an axe.
Axes are used for splitting firewood, cutting branches and small trees, and for carpentry and outdoor work. This section includes universal and carpenter's axes, splitting mauls for firewood, and small hatchets for camping and the home. General guide: how to choose hammers, mallets, axes, chisels and pry bars.
A universal axe with a thin blade cuts branches and timber, a splitting maul with a wide wedge-shaped head splits logs, and a hatchet is handy for camping and kindling.
Hatchets weigh 0.5-0.8 kg, universal axes 1-1.5 kg and splitting mauls 2-3.5 kg. A heavier head splits more powerfully but needs more strength and control.
A long handle (70-90 cm) increases striking power when splitting, while a short one (35-50 cm) is more accurate for cutting branches. A fibreglass handle does not rot and absorbs shock.
Hardened carbon steel holds its edge and does not crack in the cold. Sharpen the blade at the right angle: sharper for chopping, blunter for splitting. Read hand tool materials, hardness, coatings and ergonomics.
If you need to split a lot of firewood every year, consider an electric log splitter instead of a maul: how to choose an electric log splitter.
Split on a stable block with your feet wide apart and make sure no one is near you. Carry and store the axe with a blade cover. General rules: how to use hand tools safely.
At ToolsArmenia you can choose an axe or splitting maul by type, weight, handle and steel for firewood, the garden and camping.
