A detailed buying guide: how to choose an electric log splitter.
This section covers electric log splitters: hydraulic horizontal and vertical models running on 220–230 V mains, as well as 380 V versions. They split logs 25–50 cm long and 15–40 cm in diameter with 4–12 tonnes of force. The machine lets you prepare firewood for a house, country home, sauna or small farm without an axe or heavy effort. In the forest or far from mains power, compare engine-powered models: see how to choose a petrol log splitter.
A horizontal model pushes a log lying down onto the wedge and suits household work with 4–7 tonnes of force. A vertical model splits heavy, thick logs that are hard to lift onto a table. There are also cone (screw) splitters that work without hydraulics.
For softwood up to 25–30 cm in diameter, 4–6 tonnes is enough, while oak, beech and thick logs need 7–12 tonnes. Wet and knotty wood needs more force than dry wood. Choose the force for your wood species and diameter with some margin.
Household horizontal models usually take logs up to 37–52 cm long and 25–35 cm in diameter. The log length should match your stove or fireplace so you do not need to re-cut. Some models have a cross wedge that splits the log into four pieces at once.
Household 220–230 V models usually have a 1.5–3 kW motor, while models above 8 tonnes often run on 380 V. Check that the circuit and breaker can handle the starting current. Read how to choose tool power (W) and volt (V).
A log splitter usually works outdoors, so you need an outdoor extension cord of adequate cross-section. A cord that is too long and thin drops the voltage and can prevent the motor from starting. See how to use an extension cord safely.
Household horizontal models weigh 40–100 kg and have wheels for moving around. Cycle time (wedge forward and back) is usually 10–25 seconds and determines working speed. Check the oil level and the hydraulic system maintenance requirements.
Choose a model with two-handed operation, which keeps your hands away from the wedge while it moves. Wear gloves, glasses and sturdy footwear, and never split wood containing nails or metal. Read essential power tool safety rules and how to choose personal protective equipment.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare electric log splitters by force, log length and diameter, power and weight and choose the right model for your firewood.
