A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pneumatic die grinder.
This section covers pneumatic straight and angle die grinders with a collet chuck for working metal, weld seams, moulds and parts, deburring, polishing and carbide-burr work. They are used in car repair, metalworking, production and workshops. The air motor is light, does not overheat under load and poses no risk of electric shock, but it needs an electric or petrol compressor with sufficient output. For more on air tools, read what pneumatic tools are and how they work.
Straight models suit deep and internal surfaces, while angle models with a 90° head and extended-shaft models reach awkward spots. Micro models are designed for precise, fine work. See straight / die grinder accessory mount, RPM, and diameter.
The most common collet is 6 mm, some models also accept 3 mm or 1/4", and free speed is typically 20,000–25,000 RPM. The maximum rated speed of the accessory must be no lower than the tool speed. Read what is rotational speed (RPM) and how to choose a rotary tool or engraver: collet, RPM, power, and accessory compatibility.
Die grinders run continuously and consume about 110–200 l/min, so they are demanding on the compressor. Choose a compressor whose real delivery exceeds the tool consumption by about 30–50 %, with an adequate tank. See how to choose an air compressor and how to calculate compressor air delivery.
The rated working pressure is 6.2–6.3 bar: lower pressure reduces speed and performance, while higher pressure damages the motor and the accessory. Read how to choose compressor working pressure.
The collet holds carbide burrs, mounted points, flap and felt wheels, wire brushes and small cut-off wheels. Choose accessories with the right shank diameter for the material. See how to choose a grinding disc.
Most tools have a 1/4" inlet for a EURO, ORION or RAPID quick coupler. For continuous work, choose a hose with an inner diameter of at least 8 mm so pressure does not drop. Read how to choose an air hose and connectors.
A high-speed air motor is sensitive to moisture and dirt, so use a filter, regulator and lubricator or put air tool oil into the inlet every day. See how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.
A slim body, rubberised grip, trigger lock and rear exhaust are comfortable during long work. Metal sparks and 85–95 dB noise call for safety glasses and ear protection. Read how to choose safety glasses and how to choose hearing protection.
Disconnect the air before changing accessories, do not clamp a burr by too short a shank and never use wheels larger than allowed. Worn collets, vanes and bearings can be replaced. See how to use pneumatic tools safely and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare pneumatic die grinders by collet size, speed, air consumption, body shape and weight and choose a model that suits your jobs and compressor.
