Electric Grass Trimmers: Corded 230 V Models with Line and Blade

Electric Grass Trimmers: Corded 230 V Models with Line and Blade

Electric Grass Trimmers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose an electric grass trimmer.

This section covers corded electric grass trimmers rated at 300–1500 W, with bottom- or top-mounted motors, 23–42 cm cutting width and a cutting line or blade. They are designed for trimming lawn edges, areas around fences and trees, under shrubs and in hard-to-reach corners in home gardens, country houses and small farms. Running on mains power, the trimmer is light, relatively quiet, needs no fuel and works with no run-time limit, while the working radius is limited by the cable length. What to consider when choosing an electric grass trimmer

Type and motor position

Trimmers with a bottom-mounted motor (300–600 W) are light and suit lawn edges and small areas, while top-mounted motor models (800–1500 W) are better balanced and handle tall and coarse grass. A straight shaft is handier under shrubs, a curved one is more compact, and a split shaft makes storage easier.

Motor power

Up to 500 W is enough for a regularly maintained lawn, 700–1000 W models cut tall grass and weeds, and 1200–1500 W trimmers can run a blade on dry stalks and light scrub. See how to choose tool power (W).

Cutting width, line and blade

Cutting width is usually 23–42 cm and line diameter 1.2–2.4 mm; thicker and shaped line cuts coarse grass better. A bump-feed head releases line with a light tap on the ground, while a three- or four-tooth blade is intended only for powerful models. For consumables, read how to choose spare parts for garden and forestry equipment.

Motor and protection

Corded trimmers usually use brushed motors, while a brushless motor is less common and offers a longer service life. Thermal protection prevents the motor from overheating during long work in tall grass. Read brushed and brushless motor and what is motor thermal protection.

Cable and extension cord

The trimmer's own cable is usually 0.3–10 m long, so in the garden you almost always need a 15–40 m extension cord with at least 1.5 mm² cross-section. A cable retainer on the handle keeps the plug from pulling out accidentally. See how to use an extension cord safely and extension cord cross-section, length and reel unwinding.

Outdoor electrical safety

An outdoor socket should be protected by a 30 mA residual-current device, and you should not work on wet grass or after rain. Before work, check the cable and plug insulation. Read how to choose electrical protection and switching devices and how to inspect a power cord and plug.

Weight, ergonomics and noise

Electric trimmers usually weigh 1.5–5.5 kg; an adjustable auxiliary handle, telescopic shaft and shoulder strap reduce fatigue. Noise level is typically 85–96 dB, noticeably lower than petrol models. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems and what is noise level in db.

Safety and protective gear

The guard must always be fitted, as the line throws stones and debris. Work in safety glasses or a face shield, closed shoes and long trousers, and keep people and animals away. Read how to choose personal protective equipment and how to choose safety glasses.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare electric grass trimmers by power, motor position, cutting width, line diameter, weight and cable length and choose the right model for your garden.
