A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless tiller.
This section covers cordless tillers — light mini-cultivators and more powerful tillers at 20–40 V, 2×18 V (36 V) and 56–82 V. They are used for loosening soil in beds, greenhouses, flower borders and small to medium vegetable plots, removing weeds and working fertiliser into the soil. With no cable and no petrol, they are quieter, start easily and need no fuel-system maintenance. For a comparison with engine-powered tillers, read how to choose a tiller, cultivator, scarifier and earth auger.
Mini-cultivators suit previously worked soil, greenhouses and flower beds, while more powerful models can also loosen denser soil on a medium-sized plot. For virgin ground and large areas, cordless models are often not enough. See differences between professional and household power tools.
Working width is usually 20–40 cm and depth 10–22 cm. Hardened steel tines last longer, and changing the number of tines lets you narrow the strip for working between beds. Read how to choose spare parts for garden and forestry equipment.
20 V is enough for light loosening, 36–40 V for a typical vegetable plot, and 56–82 V holds up under load in dense soil. A 4–5 Ah battery usually covers 100–250 m² depending on the soil. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).
If you already own garden tools on the same platform, such as a mower or trimmer, you can choose a body-only version. 2×18 V models need two batteries, so take charging time into account. Read what is a unified battery platform and how to choose a battery and charger.
A brushless motor holds torque better in heavy soil and runs longer on one charge. A metal gearbox and overload protection extend the tool's service life. See what is a brushless motor.
Cordless tillers weigh around 6–20 kg: lighter ones are easier to carry, while heavier ones dig in better. An adjustable folding handle, a transport wheel and low vibration reduce fatigue. Read tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems and what is vibration level.
Before work, clear the area of stones, cables and irrigation hoses, wear sturdy closed footwear and remove the battery before cleaning the tines. The switch should have protection against accidental start-up. See how to use cordless tools safely and how to choose safety footwear and protective rubber boots.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless tillers by voltage, working width and depth, motor type and weight and choose the right model for your vegetable plot.
