Cordless Snow Blowers: for Clearing Yards, Entrances and Steps

Cordless Snow Blowers: for Clearing Yards, Entrances and Steps

Cordless Snow Blowers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a cordless snow blower.

This section covers cordless snow shovels and walk-behind snow blowers on 20–24 V, 36–48 V and twin-battery (2×18 V or 2×20 V) platforms. Shovels usually have a 25–30 cm clearing width, while single-stage and two-stage walk-behind models clear 40–56 cm. They work without a cable or fuel and often feature a brushless motor and LED lights. Cordless snow blowers suit yards, entrances, steps and paths, especially where there is no socket nearby.

What to consider when choosing a cordless snow blower

Type and snow depth

A cordless shovel suits up to 15 cm of snow and small areas, a single-stage walk-behind model handles fresh snow up to 20–30 cm, and a two-stage model copes with deeper and wetter snow. Corded handheld electric shovels are also a good option for steps. Also compare corded and engine-powered models: see how to choose an electric snow blower and how to choose an engine-powered snow blower.

Clearing width and intake height

Cordless shovels usually have a 25–30 cm clearing width, while walk-behind snow blowers clear 40–56 cm. A wider model clears faster but uses more energy and drains the battery sooner. Choose the width to suit the area and the width of your paths.

Voltage and platform

The 20–24 V platform is typically used in shovels, while walk-behind snow blowers run on 36–48 V or on two 18–20 V batteries for a combined 36–40 V. If you already own cordless tools from the same brand, for example on a TOTAL, INGCO, EMTOP or Makita platform, choose a model on the same platform. Read cordless tool voltage (V) and what is a unified battery platform.

Battery capacity and runtime

A 4 Ah battery is usually enough for a cordless shovel, while 4–8 Ah is preferable for walk-behind snow blowers. Runtime on one charge is typically 15–40 minutes depending on snow density and clearing width, so keep a spare battery for a large yard. See battery capacity (Ah).

Battery care in the cold

In freezing temperatures Li-ion batteries temporarily lose part of their capacity, so store and charge the battery indoors in the warm and fit it just before you start. After work, remove the battery, clear snow from the contacts and let a cold battery warm up before charging it. Read how to choose a battery and charger.

Motor and lights

A brushless motor uses battery energy more efficiently, runs longer on one charge and needs almost no maintenance. LED lights are handy on short winter days when clearing in the morning or evening. See brushed and brushless motor.

Throw distance, chute and auger

Cordless shovels throw snow about 3–6 m and walk-behind snow blowers 6–12 m, and a chute that rotates up to 180° is convenient. On single-stage models, an auger with rubber or plastic paddles does not damage paving stones but is not intended for gravel. A two-stage model with a steel auger works with a gap above the surface.

Weight and storage

Cordless shovels weigh about 5–7 kg with the battery, while single-stage walk-behind models weigh 15–25 kg. A folding handle and an adjustable auxiliary handle make work and storage easier. Read tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Safety and kit

Never clear a clogged auger or chute by hand: first stop the machine and remove the battery. Check whether a battery and charger are included or the model is sold bare, and work in non-slip footwear and gloves. See essential power tool safety rules and how to choose personal protective equipment.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless snow blowers and snow shovels by clearing width, voltage, battery platform, throw distance and kit contents and choose the right model for your yard.
