Electric Snow Blowers: for Clearing Yards, Pavements and Driveways

Electric Snow Blowers

A detailed buying guide: how to choose an electric snow blower.

This section covers mains-powered 220–230 V electric snow blowers that you push in front of you. Most are single-stage models with a 30–46 cm clearing width and 1.6–2.5 kW of power, while two-stage electric models are less common. They are designed for quickly clearing fresh snow from yards, driveways, pavements and paths without fuel or a noisy engine. If you only need to clear steps and narrow entrances, see how to choose an electric snow shovel.

What to consider when choosing an electric snow blower

Type and snow depth

A single-stage snow blower uses one auger to collect and throw the snow in one go and works best on fresh snow up to 20–25 cm deep. A two-stage model has an additional impeller and copes better with wet, dense snow, but electric versions are rare. For large areas and heavy snow, also compare engine-powered and cordless models: see how to choose an engine-powered snow blower and how to choose a cordless snow blower.

Clearing width and intake height

Electric snow blowers usually have a clearing width of 30–46 cm and an intake height of 15–30 cm. A narrow model suits paths and pavements, while a 40–46 cm width speeds up clearing yards and driveways. If the snow is deeper than the intake height, clear it in several passes.

Motor power and voltage

Household models usually have 1.6–2.5 kW of power, and a stronger motor throws snow further and clogs less in wet snow. All models run on 220–230 V mains, so the socket and wiring must handle this load. Read how to choose tool power (W) and volt (V).

Throw distance and chute

Electric snow blowers usually throw snow 4–10 m. It is convenient when the chute rotates up to 180° via a lever on the handle and a deflector lets you adjust the throw angle. That way snow does not land on windows, cars or an area you have already cleared.

Auger material and surface

Single-stage models have an auger with rubber or plastic paddles that touch the surface without damaging paving stones, decking or asphalt. These models are not designed for gravel or loose surfaces, because stones can be thrown out of the chute. A two-stage model with a steel auger works with a gap above the surface and is better suited to uneven areas.

Cable and extension cord

Most models have a short cable, so you need a frost-resistant outdoor extension cord of adequate cross-section, usually up to 15–30 m. Connect the snow blower to a circuit protected by a residual current device and always keep the cable on the cleared side while working. See how to use an extension cord safely and how to inspect a power cord and plug.

Moisture protection

A snow blower works in snow and meltwater, so a sealed motor housing, double insulation and splash protection matter. After use, clear off the snow and dry the machine in a warm but not hot place. Read what is an IP rating.

Weight, wheels and storage

Single-stage electric models usually weigh 12–18 kg, have two wheels and are easy to lift up steps. A folding handle and height adjustment make storage easier and reduce strain on your back. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.

Safety

Never clear a clogged chute or auger with your hand or foot: first switch the machine off, unplug it and use the clearing tool. Choose a model with a two-handed safety switch and work in non-slip footwear and gloves. Read essential power tool safety rules and how to choose personal protective equipment.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare electric snow blowers by clearing width, intake height, power, throw distance and weight and choose the right model for your yard and paths.
