Cordless Sheet Sanders: 1/4- and 1/3-Sheet Orbital Models

Cordless Sheet Sanders: 1/4- and 1/3-Sheet Orbital Models

Cordless Sheet Sanders

A detailed buying guide: how to choose an orbital sander.

This section covers 12, 18 and 20 V class cordless sheet (orbital palm) sanders with rectangular or square 1/4- and 1/3-sheet plates. They are used for rough and finish sanding of flat surfaces, walls, doors, furniture and shelves, removing old paint and smoothing filler, and a square plate reaches into corners. With no cable, they are convenient on ladders, near ceilings and when moving from room to room — at home, in the country house and in the workshop. For the general features of cordless models, read how to choose a cordless sander or polisher.

What to consider when choosing a cordless sheet sander

Type and purpose

The plate of a sheet sander makes small circular oscillations without rotating, so it suits flat surfaces and finish sanding before painting, and its rectangular shape lets you work corners and edges. A compact 12–18 V model is enough for home and furniture, while painters and joiners need a professional 18–20 V machine.

Plate size and sheet attachment

Cordless models commonly have a square 1/4-sheet plate (about 112×100 mm), while a 1/3-sheet plate (about 93×185 mm) covers large surfaces faster. Clamp attachment lets you cut ordinary sandpaper from a roll, while hook-and-loop allows quick sheet changes. Read sheet sander plate size and sanding sheet attachment.

Orbit rate and orbit diameter

Cordless sheet sanders typically run at 10,000–24,000 opm with an orbit diameter of 1.4–2.4 mm: a larger orbit removes material faster, a smaller one leaves a finer finish. Speed control helps with varnish, plastic and thin veneer. See sheet sander orbital stroke rate and orbit diameter.

Battery voltage and capacity

Sheet sanders use little energy, so the 12 V class is often enough, while 18–20 V is convenient if you already own batteries for that platform. A compact 2.0–4.0 Ah battery keeps the tool light. See cordless tool voltage (V) and battery capacity (Ah).

Dust extraction

Check for a dust bag or box and a vacuum port, as well as a sheet punch that lets you make holes in ordinary sandpaper to match the plate holes. Good dust extraction prevents the sheet from clogging and extends its life.

Vibration, weight and ergonomics

Cordless 1/4-sheet models weigh about 1.2–1.8 kg with battery and are easy to use one-handed, including on walls and overhead. Low vibration and a rubberised grip reduce hand fatigue during long sessions. See what is vibration level.

Safe operation

Wear a respirator and safety glasses when sanding old paint and varnish, and remove the battery before changing the sheet. Read how to use cordless tools safely.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare cordless sheet sanders by plate size, sheet attachment, orbit rate, voltage and weight and choose the right model for your jobs.
