A detailed buying guide: how to choose a petrol trimmer, brushcutter, hedge trimmer and pole pruner.
This section covers petrol multi-tool systems: one engine unit with interchangeable attachments on a split shaft, such as a grass trimmer, brushcutter, hedge trimmer, pole saw and cultivator. They are designed for all-round care of home plots, gardens and country houses when you want one engine-driven system instead of several separate tools. Multi-tool systems suit both homeowners and grounds maintenance professionals. For an overview of engine-powered equipment, read what motor tools and engine-powered equipment are and how to choose them.
A system usually includes 2–5 attachments: a trimmer head, brushcutter blade, hedge trimmer head, pole saw and sometimes a cultivator or extension shaft. Choose a kit with the attachments your property really needs and check that extra attachments are available. See how to choose a petrol hedge trimmer and how to choose a chainsaw bar and chain: length, pitch and gauge.
Multi-tool systems usually have 26–52 cm³ engines rated at 0.8–2.2 kW (1–3 hp). Two-stroke engines are lighter, while four-stroke engines run quieter and need no fuel mix. Read differences between two-stroke, four-stroke and diesel engines and engine displacement, power, torque and RPM: how to compare engine-powered equipment.
The shaft should have a strong, quick, play-free coupling with a clamp or knob. A straight shaft and solid drive shaft are more reliable with heavy attachments such as a cultivator or brushcutter blade. For what a cultivator attachment can do, see how to choose a tiller, cultivator, scarifier and earth auger.
Cutting width with a trimmer head is usually 38–46 cm using 2.4–3 mm line, and 23–25.5 cm with a blade. For tough grass and scrub choose a 3- or 4-tooth blade, and for the pole saw a 25–30 cm bar.
Most models start with a manual recoil starter, while an easy-start system and primer bulb reduce the effort. Two-stroke models need a correctly proportioned mix, usually 1:25–1:50. Read fuel, engine oil and two-stroke mix: how to choose and use them correctly.
The engine unit with an attachment usually weighs 6–10 kg, so an anti-vibration system, adjustable handle and double-shoulder harness are important. A well-balanced system makes long working sessions less tiring.
Petrol multi-tool systems can reach 100–110 dB, and the blade may throw stones and twigs. Work with safety glasses or a visor and ear defenders. Read how to choose safety glasses and how to choose hearing protection.
Change attachments only with the engine stopped, clean the air filter regularly, check the spark plug and grease the attachment gearboxes. Read how to safely use internal-combustion-engine tools and equipment, how to maintain and store motor tools and engine-powered equipment and how to choose spare parts for gasoline and diesel engines.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare petrol multi-tool systems by engine displacement, power, attachment kit, weight and starting system and choose the right model for your property.
