Pneumatic Belt Sanders: for Weld Seams and Hard-to-Reach Spots

Pneumatic Belt Sanders: for Weld Seams and Hard-to-Reach Spots

Pneumatic Belt Sanders

A detailed buying guide: how to choose a pneumatic belt sander.

This section covers pneumatic belt sanders — mainly narrow-belt "belt files" that run endless sanding belts 6–20 mm wide. They are used to clean up weld seams, sand hard-to-reach spots, corners, holes and edges on car bodies and metal structures, remove rust and paint locally, and for precise work on wood and plastic. An air belt sander is compact and light, does not overheat and is safe around sparks and moisture, but it needs a suitable electric or petrol compressor.

What to consider when choosing a pneumatic belt sander

Type and purpose

Thanks to its long, slim arm, a narrow belt file reaches into tight openings, corners and between pipes, while wider-belt models suit larger surfaces. Some models also have interchangeable arms for different belts. Read what pneumatic tools are and how they work and how to choose a belt sander.

Belt size and grit

The most common sizes are 10×330 mm and 20×520 mm, as well as 6×520 and 13×457 mm, and the belt must fit the arm of your model. Choose coarse P40–P80 belts for weld seams and P120 or finer for fine finishing. See how to choose a sanding belt.

Belt speed and arm angle

Free speed is usually 16,000–20,000 rpm, which corresponds to a belt speed of about 15–25 m/s, and a regulator lets you reduce speed for thin metal and plastic. The swivel arm locks at different angles, and a tracking screw keeps the belt in place. Read belt sander belt size, speed, and tracking.

Air consumption and compressor

Belt files consume about 180–400 l/min depending on belt width and power. Choose a compressor whose real delivery exceeds this consumption by at least 30 %. Read how to choose an air compressor and how to calculate compressor air delivery.

Working pressure, inlet and hose

The rated pressure is 6.2–6.3 bar: if it drops, the belt slows down and stalls under load. The tools have a 1/4" inlet for a EURO, ORION or RAPID coupler, and a hose with an 8–10 mm inner diameter is preferred. See how to choose compressor working pressure and how to choose an air hose and quick couplers.

Air preparation and lubrication

The high-speed air motor is sensitive to moisture and dust, so fit a filter, regulator and lubricator in the line or put a few drops of oil into the inlet every day. Drain condensate from the compressor tank and filter regularly. Read how to prepare compressed air: condensate, filters, regulators, and lubricators.

Ergonomics, exhaust and dust

Choose a light model with a rubberised grip, a lever trigger with safety lock and rear or side exhaust that does not blow dust into your face. Dust from sanding metal and paint is harmful, so wear a respirator, and ear protection against noise. See how to choose a respirator and how to choose hearing protection.

Safety and spare parts

Disconnect the air before changing the belt, check that the arrow on the belt matches the direction of rotation, and wear safety glasses against sparks and particles. Rollers, bearings, vanes and the arm spring are wear parts. Read how to choose safety glasses and how to choose spare parts for pneumatic and hydraulic tools.

At ToolsArmenia you can compare pneumatic belt sanders by belt size, speed, arm adjustment, air consumption and weight and choose the right model for your welding and repair work.
