A detailed buying guide: how to choose an electric chainsaw.
This section covers corded electric chainsaws for cutting firewood, pruning and felling trees, and cutting construction timber, logs, boards and formwork at home, in the garden, at the cottage, in the workshop and on site. An electric chainsaw is lighter and quieter than a petrol one, needs no fuel and is convenient for work indoors. For petrol models, read how to choose a gasoline chainsaw.
The motor can be mounted transversely (compact, affordable models for home and garden) or inline (better balance and higher output for longer work). Choose by workload and frequency of use, see differences between professional and household power tools.
Corded chainsaws are usually rated at 1500–2400 W. Lower power is enough for pruning and thin branches, while for thick logs and firewood choose 2000 W or more. See how to choose tool power (W).
Bar length (usually 30–45 cm or 12–18") sets the maximum thickness of wood you can cut. Also check chain pitch (for example 3/8") and gauge (1.1 or 1.3 mm), which must match the bar and sprocket. Read how to choose a chainsaw bar and chain: length, pitch and gauge.
An automatic oiler feeds oil to the chain continuously, and a see-through tank makes checking the level easy. Tool-free tensioning lets you adjust the chain quickly: a slack chain can jump off the bar, while an over-tight one wears quickly.
Be sure to check the chain brake (hand-guard or inertia type), chain catcher, trigger lock-off and kickback protection. Soft start and overload protection extend motor life. See tool ergonomics, weight, and safety systems.
An electric chainsaw depends on a socket, so in the yard and garden you need an outdoor extension cord with an adequate cross-section. A cable strain relief protects the connection from accidental unplugging. Read how to use an extension cord safely and extension cord cross-section, length and reel unwinding.
Corded chainsaws usually weigh 4–6 kg. For longer work, handle comfort, balance and vibration and noise levels matter. See what is vibration level and what is noise level in db.
Always hold the saw with both hands, never cut with the bar tip or above shoulder height, and unplug the saw before replacing or tensioning the chain. Read how to use a chainsaw safely, how to choose safety glasses and how to choose hearing protection.
At ToolsArmenia you can compare electric chainsaws by power, bar length, chain specifications, weight and safety systems and choose the right model for your jobs.
